What you'd notice, and what it usually means
It runs and runs and the house never gets there: Worst in the afternoon. Usually low refrigerant, a coil packed with dust, or a system that was undersized for the house it went into.
Noises that weren't there last summer: A screech on start-up is usually the fan motor. A hard click and then nothing is the capacitor, a cheap part that strands you on the hottest day of the year. Grinding means shut it off and call.
Warm air, or one room that never cools: Air blowing warm points at refrigerant or the outdoor unit. One hot room with everything else fine is usually a duct problem rather than the AC.
A musty smell when it kicks on: Water sitting in the drain pan or on the coil. Worth catching early, because a pan that overflows is how an AC job turns into a ceiling job.

Why it's worth dealing with now
Air conditioning fails in July, not in April: That isn't bad luck, it's load. Everything a system does wrong in spring it does worse under heat. A spring diagnosis is a scheduled visit; the same fault in a heatwave is an emergency call.
