Sometimes. These are the four reasons people call.
You just bought the place
You have no idea whether the last owners had three cats or ever took a register cover off. Most people who just moved in want it done once, early, so they know what they are starting with.
Nobody can remember the last time
Which is most houses. Nobody opens a duct, so it never comes up until somebody looks.
You are seeing it at the registers
Grey fuzz on the register face, or dust back on the furniture a day after you wiped it down. That is the one people usually call about.
The heat comes on in October
The system has been sitting all summer, the furnace fires for the first time, and what you smell in the first ten minutes is whatever has been lying in the ducts since spring.

What we find back there
A split in the line
Metal pipe can open up at a seam, and the flexible kind tears. Either way the hot lint ends up inside a wall instead of outside. You would never see it from the laundry room.
A gas dryer venting inside
A gas dryer sends its exhaust out through that same pipe. If the pipe has a hole in it, or has come apart at a joint, that exhaust ends up in the room instead. If you have a gas dryer, put a carbon monoxide alarm nearby and have the line checked.
Whatever else is open in front of us
A furnace flue that has slipped at a joint. A duct blowing your heated air into the crawl space. We tell you and we put it in writing. What you do about it is up to you.
If your HOA requires it. Some of them do, and Fairfax County Fire and Rescue tells every homeowner to do it yearly regardless. You get a dated invoice and before and after photos of the line for the association.

How much does air duct cleaning cost in Northern Virginia?
$298 for the returns, $598 for every supply and return, or $1,798 with an air scrubber installed, on a home up to 2,000 square feet with one system. A dryer vent is $299 booked on its own, or $199 if you add it to a duct cleaning, which saves you $100. It is included free on the $199 a year Family Care Plan. What does whole-house duct cleaning cost?
$598 for a home up to 2,000 square feet on one system. Over that adds $0.10 a square foot, and each additional HVAC system bills at 90 percent of the tier because it is isolated and cleaned separately. A 3,500 square foot house on two systems comes out around $1,198.
Do you charge per vent?
No. Per-vent pricing is where the $59 coupons turn into four figures, because a house has more vents in it than anyone counts before the truck arrives. We price the system, not the openings, and the number you get off the calculator on this page is the number on the invoice.
Is air duct cleaning worth it?
Sometimes, and the camera is how you find out rather than us. If the duct walls are furred over the way they are in the footage on this page, cleaning takes that out of the loop your air runs through, and the before and after are obvious. If the metal is clean, it is not worth it and we say so. The EPA’s own position is that routine cleaning has not been shown to prevent health problems, and we are not going to argue with them to sell a job. Look first, then decide.
Does duct cleaning help with the dust in my house?
We will not promise that. Most of what settles on your furniture came from inside the room, and the filter is what catches what is moving. What cleaning does is take out what is already stuck to the duct walls, which is downstream of the filter and which no filter change will ever reach. If somebody tells you it will end your dusting, ask them to put it in writing.
How often should air ducts be cleaned?
Every 3 to 5 years for most houses, sooner if you have pets, have just finished a renovation, or have just bought the place. We do not shorten that interval to sell more work. The dryer vent is the yearly one.
How often does a dryer vent need cleaning?
Every year. That is Fairfax County Fire and Rescue’s wording for every homeowner, and some HOAs in Northern Virginia require it and want the receipt. Sooner if clothes are taking more than one cycle to dry, which is the tell most people notice first.
How do I know if mine need it?
Look at them. We take a return cover off and run a camera while you watch, it takes about ten minutes, and there is no charge whether you book anything or not.
My HOA requires annual dryer vent cleaning. Can you handle that?
Yes, we do those all the time. You get a dated invoice and before and after photos of the line, which is normally what an association or property manager wants. Tell us how they want it addressed and we will put it on the paperwork.

What is the air scrubber on the third tier?
