Furnace repair
Gas and propane furnaces, every brand. The fault found, the price in writing, most parts on the van.
Most furnace repairs we run cost $95 to $1,180, and the diagnostic visit is $99. If the house is cold now, call (703) 997-9757. We answer day or night, and we will tell you honestly when we can get there. A new gas furnace is $4,285 to $14,040 installed and a heat pump system $8,499 to $21,650, and the HVAC estimator prices your house in about two minutes. Virginia license #2705192276, fully insured, and rated 5.0 stars across 1,128 reviews.

No heat right now?
Smell gas? Skip the list: leave the house first, then call your gas company’s emergency line or 911 from outside. Otherwise these four take five minutes, need no tools, and fix a lot of cold houses. Leave the burner door and the gas valve alone; that part is ours.
Set it to Heat, not Cool or Off, a few degrees above what the room reads now. A blank screen usually means dead batteries. A heat pump thermostat showing AUX or EM has its own answer.
Slide it out and hold it up to a light. If no light comes through, put in a new one: a filter packed solid can trip the furnace’s safety limit and shut the heat off.
Find the switch on or near the furnace that looks like a light switch and make sure it is on. Then check the panel for a tripped breaker marked furnace or air handler and reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and call us.
A high-efficiency furnace makes water, and when its drain clogs, a safety switch stops the heat on purpose so the water stays off the floor. Water in the pan or around the base means that switch did its job. Clearing the drain is our part.
All four look fine and it is still cold? That one is ours. Call (703) 997-9757 or use the form at the top. The diagnostic visit is $99, included for Comfort+ members, and every deal we are running is on our offers page.
What we do
Gas furnaces, heat pumps, dual fuel, ductless and boilers, repaired, tuned up and replaced by a dedicated heating and cooling team out of Chantilly. Pick the one you are dealing with.
Gas and propane furnaces, every brand. The fault found, the price in writing, most parts on the van.
Iced coils, stuck reversing valves, defrost boards, and the backup heat that quietly runs up the bill.
The $67 heating check for a furnace or heat pump, or the blower wheel pulled and cleaned with a full tune-up for $229.
Sized to your house rather than copied off the old nameplate, with the installed price in writing before you decide.
Cold-climate heat pumps, and gas furnace plus heat pump pairs set to switch at the right outdoor temperature.
Heat and cooling for a room the ducts do not reach, from a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Contractor.
Hot water boiler tune-ups, repairs and replacements, gas and propane: Navien, Weil-McLain and Force.
Smart thermostats, whole-home humidifiers for dry winter air, and filtration that fits the system. Heat dries a house out all winter, so a whole-home humidifier on the furnace is what stops the static shocks and the gaps in the floorboards, and the rest of your indoor air quality runs through the same system.
Read your own system
Eight things people describe on the phone every winter, and what they usually turn out to be. Two of them are get-out-of-the-house calls, and they say so first.
On a gas furnace it is almost always the flame sensor or the igniter; on a heat pump it may simply be in defrost.
A furnace that lights, runs a few seconds and shuts off is a dirty flame sensor, cleaned for $95 to $180. No glow at all is the igniter. A heat pump blowing cool air for a few minutes on a frosty morning is defrosting, which is normal. Cool air for an hour is not.
Check the thermostat mode and batteries, the breaker, and the switch on or near the furnace that looks like a light switch.
Then the filter: one packed solid can trip a safety limit. A high-efficiency furnace also shuts itself off when its condensate drain backs up. If all of that looks fine, it is ours. Our guide to what to do when the heat goes out is here.
That is short cycling, and the usual causes are a clogged filter, a dirty flame sensor, or a furnace that was sized too big for the house.
Each start is the hardest moment for the parts, so a furnace that starts four times as often wears out faster and never gets the house even. The first two are cheap fixes. The third is worth knowing before you buy the next one. More on short cycling.
Set to 69 and stuck at 66 on the coldest night usually means low airflow, or a heat pump running past the point where it needs its backup heat.
Check the filter and make sure the supply and return vents are open. On a heat pump, look for AUX or EM on the thermostat. We walk through it in the thermostat says 66 and it is set to 69.
A white frost that clears on its own is normal; a solid block of ice that stays is not.
A heat pump defrosts itself every so often by running backwards for a few minutes. When the coil stays iced, the defrost board, a sensor or low refrigerant is to blame. A defrost board runs $450 to $1,150. Do not chip the ice off; the fins bend.
A dusty burning smell on the first cold day is normal and fades; a hot electrical or plastic smell means shut the system off and call.
If it smells like rotten eggs, that is gas. Do not touch a light switch or the thermostat. Get everyone out, then call your gas company’s emergency line or 911 from outside. More on furnace smells.
A boom when the burners light is delayed ignition, and it is worth a call before you keep running it.
A squeal that follows the fan is the blower motor or its bearings. A rattle is often just a loose panel. A hum with no fan turning is the capacitor, the cheapest of the three.
Get everyone out of the house and call 911 first. Then call us.
Carbon monoxide has no smell. A cracked heat exchanger can let it into the air the furnace blows through the house, which is why we inspect it on every heating visit. The long version: cracked heat exchangers and carbon monoxide.
Heat pump thermostat showing AUX or EM heat? That one has its own answer: aux heat against emergency heat. And if it is late and the house is cold, call (703) 997-9757 rather than reading further.
What a heating repair costs
SwiftPro’s own ranges in Northern Virginia, not a national average. Where a job lands is the part, the equipment and how hard it is to reach. Cleaning the flame sensor is the cheapest fix on the list and the one we do most in the fall.
Flame sensor cleaned
The thin rod that proves the burners lit. Coated in soot, it tells the furnace the flame went out, and the furnace shuts the gas off within seconds. The single most common no-heat call we run in the fall.
$95 to $180
Condensate drain cleared, trap and switch added
A high-efficiency furnace makes water. When its drain or trap clogs, a safety switch stops the heat on purpose so the water does not end up on the floor.
$175 to $420
Run capacitor replaced
Heat pumps and furnace blowers both use one. A weak capacitor is the motor that hums and never gets going.
$240 to $370
Igniter or flame sensor replaced
A cracked hot-surface igniter glows faintly or not at all, so the burners never light. Usually on the van.
$240 to $410
Contactor replaced
The relay that powers the outdoor unit. When it sticks, the heat pump sits silent and the backup electric heat does all the work, which you see on the next bill.
$290 to $425
Blower wheel pulled and cleaned
The fan that moves the heat, packed with years of dust. Through December 31, 2026 it is $229 with a full furnace tune-up in our Clean Heat offer.
$300 to $440
Thermostat replaced
Standard through smart, wired and set up for the heat pump or furnace it is running, including the backup-heat settings most installs get wrong.
$300 to $640
Defrost board replaced
The board that tells a heat pump when to melt the frost off its outdoor coil. When it fails, the coil turns into a block of ice.
$450 to $1,150
Control board replaced
The brain of the furnace or air handler. When it goes, the parts downstream of it stop doing what they are told.
$550 to $1,180
Blower motor replaced
The indoor fan motor. Most land around $1,500. The spread is a standard motor against a variable-speed one.
$670 to $2,400
Prices checked .
The diagnostic is $99. A technician finds the actual fault, prices the repair in writing, and you approve it or decline it. An inducer motor, a gas valve or a heat exchanger is not on this list because those get quoted after we look, not guessed at.
Members take 15% off any service. The Comfort+ membership is $199 a year or $20 a month, and members get the diagnostic visit included plus four visits every year: a heating maintenance visit in the fall, a cooling maintenance visit in the spring, a dryer vent cleaning, and a water heater flush with a sewer camera inspection. The longer write-up, with the arithmetic, is what furnace repair costs in Northern Virginia.
When it is time for a new one
Our installed prices, straight from the same price book our estimator runs on. The spread is size and efficiency: a single-stage furnace in a small house at the bottom, a modulating furnace or variable-speed heat pump in a big one at the top.
A gas furnace alone
$4,285 to $14,040
or $71/mo at 0% APR for 60 months
Keeping the air conditioner you have. 2 to 5 ton, by size and efficiency. Furnace replacement
A heat pump system
$8,499 to $21,650
or $142/mo at 0% APR for 60 months
Heat pump and air handler, all-electric or ready to pair with gas for dual fuel. Heat pump replacement
Furnace and AC together
$8,898 to $23,000
or $148/mo at 0% APR for 60 months
The whole system at once, which is usually cheaper than two separate replacements. HVAC replacement
Ductless mini-split, one zone
$7,000 to $10,000
or $117/mo at 0% APR for 60 months
The fix for the room the ducts never reached: an addition, a finished basement, a bonus room. Ductless mini splits

The brands we install
We install four brands and repair every one on the market. Here is how we think about them, starting with the one we recommend most.
If you ask us what we would put in, the answer is a Trane. We are a Trane Comfort Specialist, and the reasons hold up on paper as well as on the job:
Trane usually costs more than a builder-grade box. If price is the deciding thing, ask us to quote a second brand beside it and pick with both numbers in front of you. Every Trane we install, with its price: build your Trane.
Carrier invented modern air conditioning and still makes a complete furnace and heat pump lineup, from the Comfort series up to Infinity. Its sister brands Bryant and Payne come off the same company’s lines, and we work on all three.
Solid value and straightforward to service, with Ruud as its sister brand. A good pick when the budget is tight and the house is simple, and the parts are easy to get when something does need replacing.
Our first pick for ductless. The Hyper-Heating models keep heating well below zero, which is what makes a mini-split a real answer for a cold addition or a finished basement rather than a space heater with a remote.
Made by Trane Technologies, the same company as Trane, with close cousins of the same equipment under a different badge. If you have one, we know it inside out.
We also repair Lennox, Goodman, Amana, Daikin, York, Bryant, Ruud, Payne, Coleman, Luxaire and the rest. One of our recent Google reviews is an Amana variable-speed dual fuel install, which is the point: we fit the system to the house and the budget first and the badge second.
Repairing a specific brand? Its error codes, what usually breaks and the repair prices are on its own page: Trane, Carrier, Rheem, American Standard, Mitsubishi Electric, or every brand we repair.
The system we put in first
Built to take a beating. Put in by our crew.
Heat lamps, snow and rain on one outdoor unit: that’s Trane’s own film. We’re a Trane Comfort Specialist, on Trane’s own dealer locator, and when you pick a Trane, our crew puts it in.
Films: Trane’s own.

How a heating call goes
We answer day or night, and we will tell you honestly when we can get there. That is the whole promise, and it is deliberately not a guarantee we would have to wriggle out of on the coldest night of the year.
A real arrival window and a call ahead when the technician is on the way. If we cannot make it today, we say so on the phone.
The whole system, not just the noisy part: burners, igniter, flame sensor, heat exchanger, venting, the electrical side and the airflow.
Before anything is opened up or ordered. Approve it or decline it. A decline is a normal outcome and nobody will make it awkward.
Flame sensors, igniters, capacitors, contactors, thermostats and many motors ride on the van. What does not, we order and book.

What the neighbors said
5.0 stars across 1,128 reviews. These three answer what people actually worry about with a heating call: can you come fast, will you be straight with me about an old furnace, and what did you put in.
The draft inducer motor on my furnace was failing. They were able to get out same day to look at it. Ordered parts and got a new one installed quickly. The technicians were on time, responsive, and well equipped. Fairly priced too. I have nothing but good things to say.
Furnace repair
Moises came out to assess our furnace. Despite it being over 18 years old, he gave us a fair price on a fix and attempted to do a free adjustment to the fan so we could use the heat for another day or two. Unfortunately our furnace was too far gone for that. We decided to replace it and he was very good at explaining the work that was needed and quoted a fair price for a higher end product. Much cheaper than the other company that came out. No pressure, just friendly, helpful and fair priced.
Furnace replacement
I really liked Rich’s high knowledge level concerning HVAC systems, that he didn’t try to oversell me on my equipment needs, and his ability to work with me on the pricing. I believe that I received a top notch system at a reasonable price. The equipment replaced was a Trane electric heat pump system including air handler at 20 years old. It was replaced with a new Trane system.

Most furnace repairs we run land between $95 and $1,180. A flame sensor cleaning is $95 to $180, an igniter $240 to $410, a control board $550 to $1,180, and a blower motor $670 to $2,400. The diagnostic visit is $99, and you get the exact price in writing before any work starts. An inducer motor, gas valve or heat exchanger gets quoted after we look at it.
$4,285 to $14,040 installed for a gas furnace on its own, by size and efficiency, and $8,898 to $23,000 for a furnace and air conditioner together. A heat pump system runs $8,499 to $21,650. The HVAC estimator gives you a range for your own house in a couple of minutes. From about $71 a month at 0% APR for 60 months, the whole price financed, on approved credit. How financing works
We put Trane first. We are a Trane Comfort Specialist, the lineup runs from a solid single-stage furnace to a modulating one at up to 97.3% AFUE, and its variable-speed heat pump is built for cold winters. Carrier, Rheem and Mitsubishi Electric are all brands we install and stand behind. Worth knowing: a good brand installed badly loses to a mid-range one installed well, so the install matters more than the badge.
If the house has gas, pairing a heat pump with a gas furnace (dual fuel) is usually the cheapest way to heat it: the heat pump runs most of the winter and gas takes the coldest nights. In a Dominion Energy house, gas becomes the cheaper fuel below about 38 degrees; in a NOVEC house, below about 16. All-electric homes do well with a cold-climate heat pump.
On a gas furnace, usually a dirty flame sensor or a failing igniter: the burners light briefly or not at all while the fan keeps blowing. On a heat pump, a few minutes of cool air on a frosty morning is the defrost cycle and is normal. Cool air that lasts is not.
We answer day or night, and we will tell you honestly when we can get there. If the house is cold now, call (703) 997-9757 rather than booking online, because a phone call gets you onto the dispatch board instead of the next open slot.

Fifteen to twenty years for a gas furnace that gets looked at every fall. Heat pumps run in every season, so they usually land at twelve to fifteen. A furnace past fifteen with a repair over a third of the cost of a new one is usually better replaced.
Fix it if the repair is small and the rest of the furnace is sound: fifteen years is the start of the window, not the end of it. Our rule of thumb, out loud: past fifteen, a repair over a third of the cost of a new furnace is usually money better spent on the new one, and a cracked heat exchanger ends the conversation. A new gas furnace is $4,285 to $14,040 installed, the replacement quote is free, and Comfort+ members bank 50% of each repair bill toward replacing that system, up to $1,500. From about $71 a month at 0% APR for 60 months, the whole price financed, on approved credit. How financing works
Once a year, in the fall, before the first cold night. Through December 31, 2026 our heating check is $67 for a furnace or a heat pump. The Comfort+ membership, $199 a year, includes a heating maintenance visit every fall and takes 15% off any service.
Leave the house first. Do not flip a light switch, touch the thermostat or start a car in an attached garage. Call your gas company’s emergency line or 911 from outside, and call us once they have made it safe.
Yes. Trane, Carrier, Rheem, Mitsubishi Electric and American Standard, plus Lennox, Goodman, Amana, Daikin, York, Bryant, Ruud, Payne, Coleman, Luxaire and the rest. The name on the equipment does not change whether we will fix it.
Yes, hot water boilers on gas or propane. A boiler tune-up is $99 a system, a repair starts with the $99 diagnostic, and SwiftPro’s boiler replacements run $9,900 to $16,500 installed, $12,782 to $16,500 for a condensing or combi boiler. The exact price is written down at the house, because the piping and the flue decide as much of it as the boiler does. From about $165 a month at 0% APR for 60 months, the whole price financed, on approved credit. How financing works
