Start with what you notice

What’s bothering you, and what usually fixes it

Indoor air quality is a broad label. In practice, people call us about one of these, and each one has a different fix.

Damp, musty or sticky in summer

Usually the humidity is over 60 percent, often in a basement. A whole-home dehumidifier in the ductwork pulls it down, sometimes with a fresh air system to bring outside air in on purpose instead of through leaks.

We size both to fit the space you have, including tight ones.

Dust on everything a week after you clean

Filter first: the right one, changed on time, seated so air can’t sneak around its edges. Then the ducts, if the photos show they need it.

Whole Home Air Duct Cleaning is $598, regularly $798.

Dust or a smell when the system kicks on

That points at the ducts or the equipment, not the rooms. We photograph the inside of the ducts first, so you can see what’s in there before you pay for anything.

How our duct cleaning works.

One room always stuffy

Often it’s short on return air: a supply vent pushing air in and no clear path back to the system. A return added there usually settles it.

Humidifiers, dehumidifiers, fresh air systems and filter cabinets are priced at the visit, in writing, because the install depends on where the water, the drain and the ductwork are. Current deals are on our offers page.

Humidity, both directions

Too dry in winter, too damp in summer

Humidity is the part of the air at home you feel most, and Northern Virginia gets both ends of it.

Winter. Heated air falls into the teens and twenties, and you get static, gaps in the floors and dry mornings. A whole-home humidifier on the furnace holds the house between 30 and 50 percent, the range the EPA recommends. Everything about whole-home humidifiers.

Summer. Our summers are humid, and a house that sits over 60 percent feels sticky, smells musty in the basement and gives dust mites and biological growth what they want. The AC pulls some moisture as it cools. When it can’t keep up, a whole-home dehumidifier in the ductwork does. Tight, newer houses sometimes need a fresh air system too, so outside air comes in where you choose.

Fog on the inside of the windows is the humidity talking: what it means in winter.

Filters, then ducts

The filter comes first, then the ducts

Before anything gets added to the system, the basics get checked.

Everything the system moves goes through the filter, so it’s the first thing we look at: the right size, changed on time, and seated so air can’t sneak around the edges. A thin filter in a loose slot lets dust ride straight past it.

If the house needs more, a media filter cabinet at the furnace holds a deeper filter that lasts months instead of weeks.

Then the ducts. A filter only catches what’s moving through it. Duct cleaning takes out what’s already settled inside the ducts, where no filter reaches. Whole Home Air Duct Cleaning is $598, regularly $798.

No medical promises

We’ll tell you what each of these is and what it costs. We don’t make medical claims for any of them, because we can’t show you those, and the Federal Trade Commission holds sellers of air cleaning products to proof for every one.

Asked on the phone

Indoor air quality questions, answered

What does an indoor air quality company do?

In a house, most of the work is on the heating and cooling system: holding the humidity in range with a humidifier or a dehumidifier, bringing in fresh air, filtering what the system moves, cleaning the ducts, and adding units like an air scrubber in the ductwork. That’s the work we do, across Northern Virginia.

How much does indoor air quality work cost?

Whole Home Air Duct Cleaning is $598, regularly $798, for a home up to 2,000 square feet with one HVAC system. Whole Home Air Duct Cleaning with ActivePure Air Scrubber is $1,798, and a UV Light Air Purifier added to a duct cleaning is $499 per system. Humidifiers, dehumidifiers, fresh air systems and filter cabinets are priced at the visit, in writing, because the install depends on your house.

What humidity should my house be?

Between 30 and 50 percent, the range the EPA recommends for a home. In a Northern Virginia winter, heated houses often fall to the teens or twenties. In summer, keep it under 60 percent.

Do I need a humidifier or a dehumidifier?

Measure first with an inexpensive hygrometer. Under 30 percent on a cold morning: a humidifier. Over 60 percent in summer: a dehumidifier, and a look at the AC, which should be pulling moisture as it cools. Plenty of Northern Virginia houses need both, at different times of year.

How do I know if my ducts need cleaning?

Look before you pay. We photograph the inside of your ducts first, so you can see whether they need it before you pay for anything.

How often should I change my furnace filter?

A 1-inch filter every one to three months, and monthly with pets or in the heaviest weeks of heating and cooling. A deeper 4- or 5-inch media filter lasts much longer, often 6 to 12 months. If it’s grey a month in, change it more often.

Why is my house so dusty?

Usually the filter first: the wrong size, a gap around it, or changed too late. Then leaky return ducts pulling air from the attic or crawlspace, and dry winter air that lets static hold dust on every surface. We check them in that order.

Why is one room always stuffy?

Often it’s short on return air: the room has a supply vent but no clear path for air back to the system. A return added there usually settles it.
