It’s past 15 years
Trane puts a central air conditioner at about 15 years and Carrier at 15 to 20 with maintenance; the Department of Energy plans on 18 in Virginia’s climate.
ENERGY STAR says to weigh a replacement once an AC passes 10.
A new central air conditioner, installed, runs $5,942 to $14,450 in Northern Virginia, keeping the furnace you have. Replacing the furnace with it runs $8,898 to $23,000 for both, and the HVAC estimator narrows either one to your house.

Want your own number before anyone comes out? The HVAC estimator prices your house in a few questions.
What moves the price. The size the house needs, worked out from the house and not the old label. The efficiency, single-stage or variable-speed, and what the job finds: a line set that has to be replaced, work at the electrical panel, a new pad. The HVAC estimator narrows it to your house.
Limped through August? It doesn’t have to be replaced in a heat wave. A calm season is an easier time to decide, and to compare quotes.
Outside and inside
Central air is two halves: the condenser outside and the coil inside, on top of the furnace. Here’s why that matters when one quits.

When it’s time
Four things that usually decide it. A technician tells you which apply to yours.

R-22 refrigerant hasn’t been made since 2020, so what’s left is scarce and expensive.
On an R-22 system, a leak usually ends the repair road.
Goodman’s rule of thumb: when a major part fails, or the repair is close to half the price of a new air conditioner, replacing may be the better money.
On a young system under its parts warranty, it’s usually a repair.
That can be refrigerant, a dirty coil, the airflow, the ducts or a unit that was never the right size.
A $99 diagnostic visit tells you which before anyone prices a new one.
How a replacement goes
Often same-day, and we will tell you honestly when we can get there. We run 24/7 emergency service when the heat or the air quits, and a replacement starts the same way a repair does: somebody looks at the house.
Someone from our HVAC team comes out and measures: the house, the ductwork, the venting, the electrical panel, where the outdoor unit sits.
Each option on paper with its installed price and its monthly payment, side by side. If a repair makes more sense, you hear that first.
The crew covers the floors and the path in, takes the old equipment out and away, and puts the new system in.
The system runs while the crew checks it, the thermostat gets set up with you, and two years of our labor is included. Five or ten years is an option.

SwiftPro HVAC did an excellent job replacing our AC system during a heat wave. Their price is reasonable and their service was friendly and professional. Huge thanks to Oscar, Felix and Aron for the smooth installation, they worked efficiently, were respectful of our home, and made sure everything was up and running smoothly. Highly recommend using this company!
On spec and on price for our A/C replacement. Showed up on time and all went as promised
Tyler did a wonderful job explaining everything about replacing our AC system. He came as a stranger and I feel left as a friend I can depend on in the future. He took time to go over all the different options available, did a great job of understanding what we were looking for, and even got financing approved for us with no dazzle.…

The Department of Energy plans on 18 years in Virginia’s climate. Trane says about 15, Carrier 15 to 20 with maintenance, and Carrier notes a neglected unit can fail around year 10.
Usually, yes. The outdoor unit and the coil inside are rated as a matched pair, and new air conditioners run on the newer A2L refrigerants. We’ll tell you at the estimate what your house needs.
Virginia is in the Department of Energy’s Southeast region: a new split air conditioner has to be at least 14.3 SEER2, or 13.8 SEER2 for the biggest residential sizes.
It’s worth pricing. A heat pump cools exactly like an AC and also heats, so with a gas furnace it becomes dual fuel: the heat pump on mild winter days, the furnace on the cold ones. We’ll price it both ways.
A $99 diagnostic visit tells you. Goodman’s rule of thumb: when a major part fails, or the repair is close to half the price of a new air conditioner, replacing may be the better money. A younger system with a fixable problem gets fixed.
