Signs your dryer vent is clogged
The lint screen catches most of it. The rest goes down the line a little every load and packs in at the bends and at the hood outside. You notice it here first:
- Towels need a second cycle.
- The top of the dryer is hot to the touch.
- The laundry room gets hot while it runs.
- The dryer shuts itself off partway through.
- Lint behind the dryer, or around the flap outside.
- The flap outside doesn’t open when the dryer runs.
- A faint burning smell.
Two or more of these and your dryer vent is due for cleaning, whatever the calendar says. When we come out, the camera photos show you whether the line is packed.
Dryer vent fires happen here, not just on the news
Lint burns like paper. When it packs into the dryer vent, the hot air has nowhere to go and the dryer keeps heating anyway. These three fires were traced to the dryer by the fire department, all in Northern Virginia:
DumfriesNovember 2025
Lint built up in the dryer vent caught fire at the back of a house. The home was declared unsafe and five adults had to move out. The Prince William fire marshal’s advice afterwards: have the dryer vent professionally cleaned once a year.

Wolf TrapMarch 2021
The family heard a pop and saw flames behind the dryer. Fairfax County Fire and Rescue traced it to lint in the dryer duct and put the damage at about ninety thousand dollars.

Nobody was hurt in any of the three. Every one of them started in the dryer vent.
How to keep a dryer fire from starting
- Clean the lint screen every load, and never run the dryer without it.
- Turn the dryer off when you leave the house or go to bed.
- Use a metal hose behind the dryer, not foil or plastic.
- Check that the flap outside opens when the dryer runs.
- Keep laundry, boxes and cleaning supplies clear of the dryer.
- Have the whole dryer vent line cleaned once a year.

What a dryer vent cleaning includes
The whole dryer vent run, not just the part you can reach. We run a rotary brush and a vacuum together, so the lint comes out of the house instead of getting pushed further down the pipe.
Airflow, measured
At the outside hood with the dryer running. Weak flow means a clogged line.
The full line
Brushed and vacuumed from the back of the dryer to the outside wall.
The hose behind the dryer
Checked for crushing, kinks, and foil or plastic that should be metal.
The outside hood
The flap opens freely, closes fully, and stays clear of lint and nests.
Camera photos and paperwork
We put a camera in the line, photograph what’s in it and show you. Before and after photos when we can get a clear shot, and a dated invoice if your association asks for one.
Under an hour in most homes. You get a window when you book, and your tech texts when they’re on the way.
What we fix while we’re there
Cleaning is the job. These turn up once the line is open, and every one of them has come up on a real visit:
- A joint that has come apart inside the wall
- A crushed or foil hose, swapped for metal
- An old bird nest, pulled out of the line
- A guard on the hood so the birds stay out
- A torn run, replaced
Anything past the cleaning, you get the price first and it’s your call.
Real photos from our jobs
A dryer vent cleaning, start to finish
These are from our own dryer vent cleanings in Northern Virginia, in the order we work. We start behind the dryer.
First, the hose behind the dryer
See the gash in the foil? Foil hose is thin enough to tear when the dryer gets pushed back against the wall. Once it’s open, the hot, damp, linty air leaks out behind the dryer instead of going outside.
That lint settles on the floor and the wall right behind a hot dryer, and less air makes it to the end of the line, so loads take longer to dry. We don’t patch foil. We swap it for a metal hose that holds its shape, and you get the price before we touch it.
Then, inside the pipe
This is the inside of a metal dryer vent pipe, before cleaning. Lint is packed on every side, and the hole left in the middle is a fraction of what the dryer needs to push air through. None of it shows from the laundry room. This is where the second cycle and the hot laundry room come from.
What we do
First a camera goes in the line. We photograph what’s in it and show you, so you see what we see. Then a rotary brush and a vacuum, run together through the whole line, from the back of the dryer to the hood outside. The brush knocks the lint loose and the vacuum pulls it out of your house instead of pushing it further down the pipe. Then we check the airflow at the hood with the dryer running.
The same pipe, after
Down to bare metal, seam and all. When we can get a clear shot, you get both photos of your own line, before and after, so you can see the job was done without pulling the dryer out yourself.

Nobody skips dryer vent cleaning on purpose. It just never comes up until the towels need two cycles.

Neighbors who put it on the plan
Swift Pro just performed a vent cleaning at my 50 year old house that has never had a vent cleaning. Very satisfied with price and service, the technician Aaron was polite, professional, punctual and answered all of my questions without making me feel like a dummy. I was so pleased with the service that I signed up for the Swift Pro membership. Highly recommend Swift Pro for all of you HVAC needs. I do not have any plumbing problems but they will definitely be my first call if one arises.
Great job. Professional – knows his stuff and is a good guy to boot! Signed up to membership- I will have trust and confidence in your group to care for the critical big ticket utility elements of my house. Thanks for super service.
How often to clean a dryer vent
Once a year. Fairfax County Fire and Rescue’s advice is to clean the lint out of the dryer vent pipe once a year, or more often if clothes are taking longer than normal to dry, “or have a dryer lint removal service do it for you.” That second part is us.
- 13,820home fires a year involved a dryerNational Fire Protection Association, between 2014 and 2018
- 32%of them came down to failure to cleanMore than any other single cause
- Once a yearis how often your dryer vent needs cleaningFairfax County Fire and Rescue
If your HOA asks for it. Some Northern Virginia HOAs ask for a yearly dryer vent cleaning and a receipt. Check yours. You get a dated invoice to send the association or your property manager, plus before and after photos when we can get them.
Gas dryer? Its exhaust leaves through the same pipe. If the line has a hole or a joint has come apart, that exhaust ends up in the room. Keep a carbon monoxide alarm nearby, and we check the whole line when we clean it.
Townhouse, condo and high dryer vents
In a lot of townhouses and newer homes the laundry is upstairs or in the middle of the house, so the line runs a long way through a ceiling or a wall before it reaches the outside. Every extra bend is another place for lint to settle.
If your hood is two or three stories up, tell us when you book so the tech shows up with the right ladder. One of our customers put it better than we could:
In a condo, the dryer vent can belong to the building. Ask your association first: some clean the whole building at once, and then you’re already on the list.
I highly recommend identifying the height of your outside vents to make sure they come prepared with the right equipment and ladders. Luckily, Aaron was able to bring the proper ladder as our vents are very high up.
Dryer vent cleaning reviews from neighbors
Word for word, from our Google reviews.
I was trying to dry my clothes, but my dryer just would not work. I believed that the heat trip was being activated, so I tried cleaning the vent myself. Well, I couldn’t get deep enough, so I had to call some professionals. They came as soon as they could, and cleaned out my dryer vent. Turned out that there was TONS of like solid dust chunks in there that was just completely blocking airflow. After that, my dryer worked fine.
I had Swiftpro clean my dryer vent from point to point as well another vent that was blocked with an old bird nest. Friendly customer support. Prompt tech. Highly recommend.
Moises and SwiftPro were excellent. They cleaned my dryer duct and repaired an area that had become disconnected and was therefore posing a fire hazard. Moises was punctual, friendly, and even went the extra mile to help me briefly with another small household project.
Aaron is great ! He explained to me about how they clean the dryer vent, he replaced my old one with a flex type vent duct, he showed me the camera he used to see into the dryer vent. Very professional answered all my questions . Definitely 10 out of 10.
We had Aaron from Swiftpro clean our dryer vent and he did a wonderful job. Arrived on time, was courteous and professional. He found and fixed a problem with the vent attachment at no extra charge. Would recommend highly!
Service technician Aaron K provided excellent service servicing cleaning my dryer vent. He was meticulous cleaning up dryer vent with specialized vacuum system and answered all my questions. I would definitely use swift pro again and am happy with the results.
