Ceiling Duct Cleaning in a Hallway, Scrubbed Then Blown Out

Ceiling duct cleaning works against gravity, because loosened dust wants to fall on the tech and the floor. In this hallway, a tech works the open ceiling duct, then hits it with a handheld blower to knock the rest loose.

What you’re seeing in this video

Aaron, our duct cleaning technician, stands under an open ceiling duct in a hallway in an N95 mask, red headlamp and work gloves, the register already off. He works the inside of the opening first, loosening what's stuck to the metal around the collar.

Then he brings up a handheld electric blower and points it into the duct. The burst of air knocks dust off the walls of the run so it can be pulled out with the rest. It's loud, which is half of why people like the sound of it.

Ceiling vent cleaning in a hallway is common where the ducts run through the attic. Those runs drop down through the ceiling, and the opening over your head is the last stop before the room.

Why it matters in your house

  • Ceiling registers show dirt as dark streaks on the paint around the grille. That's dusty air hitting the ceiling, and a fair sign the duct behind it needs cleaning.
  • Attic duct runs sit in the hottest, dustiest part of the house. A gap at any joint can draw insulation dust in, so they're worth checking while they're open.
  • Put a drop cloth or towel down before you pull a ceiling register yourself. What's on top of the grille comes down with it.

Can you clean ceiling air ducts yourself?

You can clean the grille: pop it off, wash it in the sink and vacuum as far into the collar as the hose reaches. The duct itself is different. It needs strong vacuum on the system and tools that reach down the run, or you just move the dust around. That's where air duct cleaning comes in.
