Dirty Air Vents and a Dusty Trunk Line in a Just-Bought House

If you just bought a house, the dirty air vents came with it, and so did the dust inside the ducts. This clip shows years of buildup in a trunk line, a wall return and a floor register.

What you’re seeing in this video

The voice on camera does the reaction for you: woah, what is this, you bought this house a day ago? Then the close-ups. Duct walls caked gray. The inside of a trunk line, the big main duct that runs off the furnace and feeds the smaller runs, coated end to end.

A wall return opening is packed with debris around its edges, and a floor register is so clogged its slots barely show. Nobody's in these shots. It's just the house, the way the last owner left it.

What they say on camera

Woah, woah, what is this? Are these your ducts? And you just bought this house a day ago, and you haven't cleaned this out. Give us a call, and we'll help you right out.

Why it matters in your house

  • Home inspections rarely open the ducts. If your house just changed hands, have them looked at before you unpack, while the rooms are empty and easy to work in.
  • A dusty trunk line feeds every room on that run. Clean only the registers and the trunk keeps sending dust right back to them.
  • Dust from painting or a pre-sale flip often ends up in the ducts too. Ask the seller what work was done, and when.

Should I clean the air ducts after buying a house?

It's a good time to. You don't know how long it's been, whether the last owners had pets or smoked, or what a pre-sale paint job left behind. An empty house is the easiest one to clean, too. Pull a couple of registers first, and if the boots look like these, book it before move-in.
