Want your own number before anyone comes out? The HVAC estimator prices your house in a few questions.

What moves the price. The size the house needs, the efficiency, a single-stage or variable-speed outdoor unit, the backup heat the air handler carries, and what the job finds, like a new line set or work at the electrical panel. The HVAC estimator narrows it to your house.

In January

Heat pumps and a Northern
Virginia winter

More of our installs are heat pumps than any other system. A heat pump pulls heat out of outdoor air, even cold air, and moves it inside. Here’s what that looks like in January.

  • Backup heat is part of the design. On the coldest nights, electric strips in the air handler help. That’s normal. Strips running all day on a 45 degree afternoon isn’t, and it’s the classic sign the heat pump isn’t carrying the house. Aux heat, explained.
  • Defrost is normal too. In winter the outdoor coil frosts over, and the heat pump runs in reverse for a few minutes to clear it, sometimes with a cloud of steam off the unit.
  • Dual fuel splits the job: the heat pump for most of the winter, a gas furnace below a set outdoor temperature. Our dual fuel guide works out where that switch makes sense on Northern Virginia gas and electric rates.
  • The long read: our heat pump winter guide.

When it’s time

When a heat pump is worth
replacing, and when it isn’t

Four things that usually decide it. A technician tells you which apply to yours.

It’s past 10 to 15 years

The Department of Energy plans on 15 years for an air-source heat pump, and Trane and Carrier put most at 10 to 15, shorter than an AC because a heat pump runs nearly all year.

ENERGY STAR says to weigh a replacement once one passes 10.

It runs on R-22

R-22 refrigerant hasn’t been made since 2020, so what’s left is scarce and expensive.

On an R-22 heat pump, a leak usually ends the repair road.

The backup strips run all day

When the outdoor unit can’t carry the house, the strips do, and they cost far more to run.

A $99 diagnostic visit tells you whether it’s a repair, a setting or the heat pump itself.

It ices up and stays iced

A coil that frosts and clears is normal. One that stays a block of ice points at a defrost part, the refrigerant or the airflow.

Some of those are repairs, which is why a technician looks first.

How a replacement goes

From the first look
to the system running

Often same-day, and we will tell you honestly when we can get there. We run 24/7 emergency service when the heat or the air quits, and a replacement starts the same way a repair does: somebody looks at the house.

  1. 1

    We look at the house

Someone from our HVAC team comes out and measures: the house, the ductwork, the venting, the electrical panel, where the outdoor unit sits.

  2. 2

    Every option, priced

Each option on paper with its installed price and its monthly payment, side by side. If a repair makes more sense, you hear that first.

  3. 3

    Install day

The crew covers the floors and the path in, takes the old equipment out and away, and puts the new system in.

  4. 4

    Started and explained

The system runs while the crew checks it, the thermostat gets set up with you, and two years of our labor is included. Five or ten years is an option.

Paying for it

Rebates, financing and
what to ask before you sign

  • Financing, on approved credit. The monthly figures on this page are the plans our estimators use. See yours on the financing page or at the estimate.
  • The federal tax credit ended for heat pumps, furnaces and air conditioners installed after 2025, so nobody should be pricing one in.
  • Comfort+ membership is $199 a year. The diagnostic visit is included, and half of each repair bill is banked toward replacing that system, up to $1,500. How Comfort+ works.
  • Holding someone else’s quote? Our free second opinion: a technician looks at the system you were quoted on and tells you what it actually needs.

I used SwiftPro in April 2025 to replace a gas furnace and a traditional A/C unit with a heat pump. We just had an Amana variable speed, dual fuel heat pump / gas furnace installed. Oscar, Felix, and Elijah did a great job with installation. No issues, they answered my questions, got me set up with the thermostat app, and the system was running fine (and quietly!) right away.…

Asked at the estimate

Heat pump questions,
answered straight

How much does heat pump replacement cost in Northern Virginia?

A heat pump system, the outdoor unit and the air handler, runs $8,499 to $21,650 installed. Dual fuel, a heat pump paired with a gas furnace you keep, is priced at the house. Size, efficiency and whether it’s a variable-speed model decide where yours lands. From about $142 a month at 0% APR for 60 months, the whole price financed, on approved credit. How financing works

Will a heat pump keep my house warm in a Virginia winter?

Yes, when it’s sized for a winter night and not just a July afternoon. Backup strips cover the coldest hours, and in a house with gas, dual fuel hands the coldest nights to the furnace. Our heat pump winter guide covers what to expect.

How long does a heat pump last?

The Department of Energy plans on 15 years, and Trane and Carrier put most at 10 to 15. A heat pump works in both seasons, so it wears faster than an air conditioner. Yearly maintenance and clean filters stretch it.

What’s the difference between aux heat and emergency heat?

Aux heat is the backup strips helping the heat pump on their own when it’s cold. Emergency heat is you switching the heat pump off and running on the strips alone, for when the outdoor unit has failed. Our aux heat guide has the details.

Should I replace my AC with a heat pump?

If the furnace is gas and in good shape, a heat pump where the AC sat gives you dual fuel: the heat pump heats on mild days and the furnace takes the cold ones. If the house is all electric, a heat pump is already the system. We’ll price it both ways.

What efficiency does a new heat pump need in Virginia?

At least 14.3 SEER2 for cooling and 7.5 HSPF2 for heating, the Department of Energy’s floor for a new split heat pump.
