Like for like at the Newington end, dual fuel in the gas streets of Kings Park.
Electric heat, which in houses like these usually means a heat pump, covers roughly 40 percent of Springfield’s owner homes, and it bunches at one end of town. Newington Forest is about three in four electric and Newington close to six in ten; their typical owner homes date from 1984 and 1981, and in both, half or more of the homes are townhouses. Springfield proper and West Springfield sit near a third. Kings Park, North Springfield and Ravensworth are about one in ten or fewer.
A 1984 Newington Forest townhouse is past its first heat pump and very likely its second. If the current one was set during the 2000s, before 2010, R-22 is probably what’s in it. The usual job there is like for like: the condenser on the pad out back and a matched air handler where the old one stands, often a closet on the lowest level or a tight attic, with electric strips inside as backup heat.
The gas streets are different. A Kings Park or North Springfield house with a sound gas furnace can take a heat pump in the air conditioner’s spot out back, heating through the mild months and handing the cold snaps to the furnace. Dominion supplies the electricity across most of Fairfax County, and our dual fuel guide figures the outdoor temperature at which the furnace should take over at Dominion’s rates.
West Springfield can have both on one row of townhouses: about a third of its owners heat with electricity and two thirds with gas, so the unit next door can be a heat pump while yours is an air conditioner over a furnace. Read your own label before pricing anything.

When a heat pump in Springfield is worth replacing.
New outdoor unit, original air handler
In some 1980s Newington Forest townhouses the outdoor half has been replaced once or twice while the air handler inside never was. A mismatched pair can heat weakly and ice up more often, and the cure is the matched set, not another outdoor unit.
The AC quit, and you heat with gas
A heat pump can go where the air conditioner sat, heat on mild days and leave the cold nights to the furnace. That’s dual fuel.
It’s past 15 years old
It heats all winter and cools all summer, so it piles up hours an air conditioner never sees. Past 15 years, price the replacement beside any big repair.

How to pick the best heat pump installer in Springfield.
Questions to ask anybody who quotes you, us included.
Did they check the breaker and wire for the backup strips?
A new air handler’s electric heat may not draw what the old one did. Ask whether the quote covers the breaker and wire size for the strips, so your panel and the inspector agree with the new equipment.
Did they size it, or copy the old label?
Copying the old nameplate repeats whatever guess was made when the house was built. The wrong size runs worse in both seasons.
Is the air handler in the price?
A heat pump system is the outdoor unit plus the air handler inside. Ask whether the quote covers both, matched, in writing.
Who sets up the backup heat?
Set wrong, the electric strips run on mild days. Ask who programs the thermostat and at what outdoor temperature the strips may come on.
What our customers say.
Moises and Oscar did a superlative job doing a custom installation of a new HVAC unit in a tight basement space. And they then took the time to go over system operation. Top tier job and service in all respects!

Heat pump replacement questions from Springfield.
Does the Washington Gas dual fuel rebate cover a Newington Forest heat pump swap?
Usually not. Washington Gas ties that rebate to taking out a central air conditioner and putting in a qualifying heat pump; trading an old heat pump for a new one doesn’t count. So it’s a live question in the gas houses of Kings Park, North Springfield and West Springfield, and rarely for an all-electric townhouse.
Why does the air from my Springfield heat pump feel lukewarm?
Heat pump air leaves the registers cooler than a gas furnace’s, and the system runs longer to make up for it. That’s normal. Rooms that never reach the setting, or backup heat that stays on through mild weather, are the signs to call, and a $99 diagnostic visit finds the cause.
How much does heat pump replacement cost in Springfield?
$8,499 to $21,650 installed for a heat pump system, the outdoor unit and the air handler, 2 to 5 ton. A small single-stage system lands near the bottom, a big variable-speed one near the top. The HVAC estimator narrows it to your house.
Should I get a heat pump, or a furnace and air conditioner?
A heat pump system runs $8,499 to $21,650 installed; a gas furnace and air conditioner together, $8,898 to $23,000. No gas line usually means a heat pump. With gas, you can keep the furnace and add one; our heat pump vs gas furnace guide runs the numbers.
