Where the repair lands depends on the part: a thermocouple or an element is a short job, a gas control valve takes longer and costs more, and either way you see the number before we start.
Water coming out of the tank body itself can’t be repaired. That’s a replacement, and the installed prices for one are on our water heaters page.
What’s different in Springfield
A lot of Springfield water heaters aren’t dead when they get a call. They’re lukewarm. The shower never gets hot, or it starts hot and fades to warm in two minutes. Owners assume the tank is finished. In houses like these, built around 1968 in the median, it often isn’t, and a lukewarm tank has three common causes that all cost less than a new one.
The first is the dip tube, a plastic pipe inside the tank that sends incoming cold water to the bottom. When it cracks or breaks apart, the cold water mixes into the top where the hot outlet is, and the tank seems to give out. You may find white plastic flakes in the aerators. The second is a thermostat on an electric tank set low or failing; four in ten Springfield owners heat with electricity. The third is a lower element on that same tank.
On a gas tank, lukewarm can mean the gas control isn’t opening fully, or the burner is dirty and the flame is weak. In Kings Park and North Springfield, where most owners burn gas, an older tank may hold that dirt in the burner tray for years.
What we do is draw hot water at the tap and put a thermometer on it. If the temperature is far off the setting, we know the water is mixing. If the tank is simply slow, we look at the heating part. Then we say what it is, and write down the price.

The signs
If you find small white or cream flakes of plastic in a faucet screen, the dip tube may be breaking apart. It’s a repair, and it’s cheaper than a tank.
On a gas tank that’s usually the pilot, the thermocouple that keeps it lit, or the gas valve. On an electric tank, it’s usually an element or the reset that tripped.
A shower that goes cold in five minutes often means a failed lower element on an electric tank, or a tank so full of sediment that it heats far less water.

Choosing who does it
Questions to ask anybody who looks at your tank, us included.
A thermometer reading tells you if the tank is making hot water. If it is, the problem is mixing, not heating.
A plumber who goes straight to replacement without testing the thermocouple, the valve or the elements may be selling you a tank you don’t need.
A repair that leaves a stuck relief valve or a bad vent connection behind isn’t finished. Ask what else they looked at while the cover was off.

Questions
A broken dip tube, a failed lower element or heavy sediment can all do it. A tech should be able to tell which from a few tests.
Often. If the tank body is sound, a dip tube, thermostat or element is a modest repair. We tell you before you pay.
The visit to find what’s wrong is $49, $250 after hours. The repair is priced in writing at the tank, before we start, because a thermocouple and a gas valve are very different jobs.
Repair it when the tank is sound and a part failed. When the tank itself leaks, it’s a replacement, and we’ll show you where the water is coming from before you decide.
