What it costs

What drain cleaning costs in Springfield.

Where the clog sits decides the price. A sink, tub or shower drain is one fixture. When every drain in the house is slow or water comes up the lowest one, it’s the main line, and that’s a bigger machine and a longer run.

If the main line clogs again inside a year, or the cable comes back with roots, a camera look for $89 on the same visit tells you whether it’s a clog or a broken pipe. We show you the picture either way.

Comfort+ membership is $199 a year for four visits: a dryer vent cleaning, a water heater flush with a sewer camera inspection, a heating maintenance visit and a cooling maintenance visit.

What’s different in Springfield

Springfield is four neighborhoods of pipe, and each one clogs for its own reason.

Springfield was built over about forty years, so ask where in town you live. North Springfield is the old end: the median home there dates from 1957. A house that old is often on a slab or over a basement with its drains tied together under the floor, and that single run to the street carries the whole house. A slow tub there is rarely the tub alone. We cable from the cleanout outside when there is one, so nobody has to pull a fixture.

Kings Park and most of West Springfield went up in the 1960s and 70s. The median owner home across the whole town is 1968, and 56 in 100 homes are detached. In those houses the kitchen drain is the one that gives out first, because it carries the heaviest load of grease and starch, and scale has been narrowing the pipe for decades. If a cable clears it and it comes back by spring, we’d rather put a camera in than keep clearing it.

Ravensworth is all single-family houses, mostly from the mid 1960s, with big trees. Fairfax County’s wastewater office says roots get into open joints and cracks and, in time, can break the line, and in an old yard that is the cause of a repeat clog more than any habit in the kitchen. After a root clearing, the county asks you to let it know so its own crew can clean the main.

Newington Forest and Newington are the 1980s end, with more than half townhouses. Those lines are plastic, so a clog there is almost always what went down, and wipes sold as flushable are the usual one. In a row of townhouses the clog can be yours, or it can be in the pipe the row shares. Run water in the lowest bathroom and tell us if a neighbor’s drain acts up too.

By the numbers

Springfield houses, by the numbers

From the Census Bureau’s 2020 to 2024 survey, owner-occupied homes unless it says otherwise.

Springfield

  • Built before 1980about 6 in 10 Census
  • Built since 2000about 1 in 10 Census
  • Most homes aresingle-family houses, about 6 in 10 Census
  • Heated withgas, about 6 in 10 Census
  • Rentedabout 2 in 10 Census
  • Before 1980, drains inside the house are often cast iron, which scales up inside and slows down over the years before it ever fully clogs.

Which clog it is

One slow drain, or the whole house backing up in Springfield.

The kitchen branch gives out before the main does

Springfield kitchens get the worst of it: cooking grease, rice, pasta water. If the sink drains slowly and everything else in the house runs fine, the clog is in the branch behind that sink, and that is the cheapest kind to clear.

It clogs again every year or two

In houses this age the line to the street is often clay or cast iron, and roots find the joints. Clearing works, but if it keeps coming back, the camera says whether a repair would end it.

The townhouse next door backed up too

Townhouse rows often share a line before it reaches the street. If a neighbor is fighting the same clog, tell us, because the fix may be on common pipe the association handles.

Choosing who clears it

How to pick the best plumber for drain cleaning in Springfield.

Questions to ask anybody who offers to clear a drain, us included.

  1. Do they look for a cleanout before they move a fixture?

Pulling a toilet to get a cable in is a last resort. A cleanout outside the house is a cleaner way in. A plumber who goes looking for one first is saving you a reseal and a wax ring.

  2. Do they price it before they run the cable?

You should hear whether it’s a one-drain clearing or the main line, and the price for it, before anybody feeds a cable in. A price that shows up after the work is a bad sign.

  3. Do they push chemicals or a new line on the first visit?

A clear drain doesn’t need a bottle of anything, and a single clog is not a reason to dig. If someone jumps to replacing the sewer line without a camera picture, get a second look.

Questions

Drain questions from Springfield.

Every March my Springfield kitchen sink backs up. Is it the pipe?

It can be. A kitchen line in a house from the 1960s or 70s often has a root-grown joint or scale buildup at one point, and a spring of wet weather and new growth is when it tightens. Clearing it works. If it returns, a camera, $89 on the same visit, shows whether it’s one joint or the whole run.

Is a clog in my Springfield townhouse my problem or the association’s?

Yours if it’s behind your own fixtures. If your neighbors’ drains slow down at the same time, the clog may be in the pipe the row shares, which the association handles. Tell us when you call and we’ll say where the cable stopped.

How much does drain cleaning cost in Springfield?

One clogged sink, tub or shower drain is $200 to $800. A main line backing up into the house is $550 to $1,650. Where the clog is and how far down it sits moves the number inside that range.

Should I pour a drain cleaner in first?

Better not. The strong ones can sit in the trap, damage older pipe, and splash back on whoever opens the drain next. Try a plunger on a sink or tub, and if that doesn’t move it, call.
