What it costs

What drain cleaning costs in Hamilton.

Where the clog sits decides the price. A sink, tub or shower drain is one fixture. When every drain in the house is slow or water comes up the lowest one, it’s the main line, and that’s a bigger machine and a longer run.

If the main line clogs again inside a year, or the cable comes back with roots, a camera look for $89 on the same visit tells you whether it’s a clog or a broken pipe. We show you the picture either way.

Comfort+ membership is $199 a year for four visits: a dryer vent cleaning, a water heater flush with a sewer camera inspection, a heating maintenance visit and a cooling maintenance visit.

What’s different in Hamilton

Hamilton has two kinds of house, and a basement laundry standpipe is usually the tell.

Hamilton splits almost evenly. About four in ten owner homes went up before 1980, the old ones in the middle of town, and about four in ten since 2000, mostly newer streets on its edge. Nine in ten are detached. So the first thing we ask on the phone isn’t the street, it’s the age of the house, because an 1890s kitchen line and a 2010 one fail for different reasons and take different machines.

In the older houses, look at the laundry. A basement washer in an old Hamilton house usually drains into a standpipe, an open pipe in the wall that takes the hose and runs to a trap. Lint, soap and a fifty-year-old trap make it the most common place for water to rise onto the floor. If your washer overflows on the drain cycle, the standpipe is the clog about as often as the main is.

Cast iron and clay pipe in the old center narrows from the inside, and kitchen lines in those houses often run a long way, because a kitchen or bath was added at the back of the house, far from the stack. A long, shallow run catches grease before it ever reaches the main. A cable opens it, and a pass with the jetter after cleans the walls so it doesn’t close again by spring.

The newer streets are the easy ones. PVC clears fast, and what’s in it is almost always wipes, hair, a fork down the disposal. About one Hamilton home in five is from the 1980s or 90s, a middle group where either story can be true, so we cable first and let the cable tell us what we’re dealing with.

Which clog it is

One slow drain, or the whole house backing up in Hamilton.

The washer drain cycle is the warning

Most clogs announce themselves at the washer first. If the standpipe burps or the water level rises toward the top during the drain cycle, the line is closing, even if the sinks still seem fine. That is a good time to call, before the laundry room floor does the telling.

Only one sink or tub is slow

If the kitchen sink backs up but the bathroom drains fine, the clog is in that branch, usually grease or food in the kitchen, hair and soap in a tub. That’s a one-fixture clearing.

Water comes up the lowest drain

When the washer drains and water shows up in a basement shower or floor drain, or flushing a toilet bubbles the tub, the clog is past the branches in the main line. Stop running water until it’s cleared.

Choosing who clears it

How to pick the best plumber for drain cleaning in Hamilton.

Questions to ask anybody who offers to clear a drain, us included.

  1. Do they ask how old the house is before they choose the machine?

A small cable is right for an old kitchen line, a bigger head for a newer main. Someone who brings one machine to every house will either miss the clog or lean on a pipe too thin for it.

  2. Do they price it before they run the cable?

You should hear whether it’s a one-drain clearing or the main line, and the price for it, before anybody feeds a cable in. A price that shows up after the work is a bad sign.

  3. Do they push chemicals or a new line on the first visit?

A clear drain doesn’t need a bottle of anything, and a single clog is not a reason to dig. If someone jumps to replacing the sewer line without a camera picture, get a second look.

Questions

Drain questions from Hamilton.

Our washer drain backs up onto the basement floor of our old Hamilton house. Is the main line blocked?

Maybe, but check the standpipe first. If the washer overflows while the sinks and toilets are fine, it’s a lint and soap plug in the standpipe or its trap. If a basement drain or the tub also rises, it’s the main.

Can you clear the drains in a house that’s been in the family for generations?

Yes, and old pipe is common work for us. We feed the cable slowly, watch what comes back, and tell you if the pipe looks too thin for more than a gentle pass. Then we talk about whether a camera is worth it.

How much does drain cleaning cost in Hamilton?

One clogged sink, tub or shower drain is $200 to $800. A main line backing up into the house is $550 to $1,650. Where the clog is and how far down it sits moves the number inside that range.

Should I pour a drain cleaner in first?

Better not. The strong ones can sit in the trap, damage older pipe, and splash back on whoever opens the drain next. Try a plunger on a sink or tub, and if that doesn’t move it, call.
