One slow tub, everything else fine
That’s a branch, not the main. Hair and soap are the usual cause, and a strainer in the tub catches most of it. If the plunger moves it only for a day or two, call. The cable gets what the plunger couldn’t reach.

What it costs
Where the clog sits decides the price. A sink, tub or shower drain is one fixture. When every drain in the house is slow or water comes up the lowest one, it’s the main line, and that’s a bigger machine and a longer run.

If the main line clogs again inside a year, or the cable comes back with roots, a camera look for $89 on the same visit tells you whether it’s a clog or a broken pipe. We show you the picture either way.
Comfort+ membership is $199 a year for four visits: a dryer vent cleaning, a water heater flush with a sewer camera inspection, a heating maintenance visit and a cooling maintenance visit.
What’s different in Haymarket
The Town of Haymarket is small, 472 owner homes with a median build year of 1995. A third are townhouses and nearly two in three are detached. Drains from those years are plastic, and the clogs are the household kind: hair and soap in tub drains, grease in kitchen lines, paper towels and wipes in toilets. A good share clear in one pass.
Dominion Valley and Piedmont share the Haymarket address but not the Town’s limits, and most of those houses are 2000s or later, many of them big, with finished basements. A basement bathroom or wet bar is the lowest drain in the house, so it’s the first place a main line clog shows. If the basement is slow while upstairs runs fine, say so. It tells us to go for the main line.
Bull Run Mountain Estates is another era. All of its owner homes are single-family, the median year built is 1978, and nearly six in ten date from before 1980. Inside the walls of a house from the 1970s you may find cast iron or early plastic, and a kitchen line that old can be narrowed by decades of scale. A sink that’s gotten slower every year is that, not last night’s dinner.
The Town’s old center falls under a Historic District ordinance the Town Council adopted in 1994, which governs what can be built or changed on the outside of a building. Clearing a drain from the inside doesn’t touch it. If a clog ever leads to digging in the yard, check with the Town before you break ground.
Neighborhood by neighborhood
Census figures for the owner-occupied homes in each place, and where houses that age usually clog.
| Place | Median home built | Most homes are | Heated with | Where it usually clogs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bull Run Mountain Estates | 1978 | single-family houses, nearly all | electricity, about 4 in 10 | Scale in cast iron under the floor. |
| Haymarket | 1995 | single-family houses, about 6 in 10 | gas, about 6 in 10 | Wipes and grease in PVC; a low spot outside. |
By the numbers
From the Census Bureau’s 2020 to 2024 survey, owner-occupied homes unless it says otherwise.
Inside the town limits only, about one in eighteen of the owner homes with Haymarket mail. Dominion Valley, Piedmont and Bull Run Mountain Estates sit outside it, in the county.

Which clog it is
That’s a branch, not the main. Hair and soap are the usual cause, and a strainer in the tub catches most of it. If the plunger moves it only for a day or two, call. The cable gets what the plunger couldn’t reach.
Townhouse rows often share a line before it reaches the street. If a neighbor is fighting the same clog, tell us, because the fix may be on common pipe the association handles.
New PVC rarely fails, so in a house this young a clog is almost always something that went down: wipes, grease, a toy. One clearing usually ends it.

Choosing who clears it
Questions to ask anybody who offers to clear a drain, us included.
The Town, Dominion Valley and the mountain are different eras of house. A plumber who asks the year before heading out brings the right cable and expects the right pipe.
You should hear whether it’s a one-drain clearing or the main line, and the price for it, before anybody feeds a cable in. A price that shows up after the work is a bad sign.
A clear drain doesn’t need a bottle of anything, and a single clog is not a reason to dig. If someone jumps to replacing the sewer line without a camera picture, get a second look.

Questions
Run a sink or the washer upstairs and watch the basement drain. If it gurgles or the water rises, it’s the main line. If nothing changes, the clog is in that bathroom’s own branch and it’s a one-fixture clearing.
Many of those houses are from the 1970s, so cast iron or early plastic is likely. A camera look, $89, tells you what you actually have before anyone talks about replacing it.
One clogged sink, tub or shower drain is $200 to $800. A main line backing up into the house is $550 to $1,650. Where the clog is and how far down it sits moves the number inside that range.
Better not. The strong ones can sit in the trap, damage older pipe, and splash back on whoever opens the drain next. Try a plunger on a sink or tub, and if that doesn’t move it, call.
