Where the cable stops tells you the cause
A clog that clears and returns in the same month stopped the cable at the same distance both times. That distance, on a house you know, points to the spot. Ask for it.

What it costs
Where the clog sits decides the price. A sink, tub or shower drain is one fixture. When every drain in the house is slow or water comes up the lowest one, it’s the main line, and that’s a bigger machine and a longer run.

If the main line clogs again inside a year, or the cable comes back with roots, a camera look for $89 on the same visit tells you whether it’s a clog or a broken pipe. We show you the picture either way.
Comfort+ membership is $199 a year for four visits: a dryer vent cleaning, a water heater flush with a sewer camera inspection, a heating maintenance visit and a cooling maintenance visit.
What’s different in Stafford
Aquia Harbour is the plainest picture of the county: 2,332 owner homes, the median built in 1984, and 99.6 in 100 of them detached houses. Roughly two thirds went up between 1980 and 1999. Those are decades of one family in one house, a kitchen drain taking twenty-five years of dinners, and a hall bath that was never the one anybody used. A house like that clogs where its use has been heaviest, not where a pipe is oldest.
Around Stafford Courthouse the mix turns. The median owner home there is from 2005, and of the area’s roughly 1,570 occupied homes, 811 are rented. A rental clog is a different call. The person on the phone may not know where the cleanout sits, or whether the last tenant poured a pan of grease down the sink, and the owner may be across the county. We ask who’s paying before we start, and send the price to whoever approves it.
The 1980s and 90s houses run the same way almost everywhere in this county, and that’s useful. Builders then put in plastic drains, with one long main under the slab or floor and branches that turn at the same few places. When a cable stops at the same spot twice, that is usually a bad joint or a sag, not a bigger clog, and that’s when we’d rather look with a camera than clear it a third time.
The newest stretch, 9,388 of ZIP 22554’s 21,005 homes, was built since 2000 and has the most fixtures per house: three bathrooms, a laundry up on the second floor, a basement bath nobody planned for. More than a quarter of the homes here are not detached, and 3,410 in 22554 are attached. In a row, a gurgle in the lowest bath can come from next door. Mention it on the call and we’ll check before we cable.
Neighborhood by neighborhood
Census figures for the owner-occupied homes in each place, and where houses that age usually clog.
| Place | Median home built | Most homes are | Heated with | Where it usually clogs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aquia Harbour | 1984 | single-family houses, nearly all | electricity, nearly all | Wipes and grease in PVC; a low spot outside. |
| Stafford Courthouse | 2005 | single-family houses, about 4 in 10 | gas, about 6 in 10 | The kitchen line, from grease. |
By the numbers
From the Census Bureau’s 2020 to 2024 survey, owner-occupied homes unless it says otherwise.
ZIPs 22554 and 22556 as a whole: every Stafford address. The Census places in the table hold about one in seven of these homes.
Which clog it is
A clog that clears and returns in the same month stopped the cable at the same distance both times. That distance, on a house you know, points to the spot. Ask for it.
If the kitchen sink backs up but the bathroom drains fine, the clog is in that branch, usually grease or food in the kitchen, hair and soap in a tub. That’s a one-fixture clearing.
When the washer drains and water shows up in a basement shower or floor drain, or flushing a toilet bubbles the tub, the clog is past the branches in the main line. Stop running water until it’s cleared.

Choosing who clears it
Questions to ask anybody who offers to clear a drain, us included.
A number of feet from the cleanout or fixture tells you where the problem sits and gives the next plumber a place to look. Without a number, you can’t tell a cleared line from a bored-through one.
You should hear whether it’s a one-drain clearing or the main line, and the price for it, before anybody feeds a cable in. A price that shows up after the work is a bad sign.
A clear drain doesn’t need a bottle of anything, and a single clog is not a reason to dig. If someone jumps to replacing the sewer line without a camera picture, get a second look.

On July 3, I called to have a clogged floor drain cleared. Thankfully they arrived on July 4th which was greatly appreciated. No one else would come out do to the holiday. Thank you

Questions
Not after a good cable run. A repeat clog every few months points to one spot, usually a joint or a low section. Ask the plumber how far the cable went, then add a camera, $89 on the same visit, to see why.
At the meter on the water side. The sewer from your house to its connection is yours to maintain, so a clog that backs up into the house is yours to clear, and the County’s Utilities office is the one to call if the cable gets into the main.
One clogged sink, tub or shower drain is $200 to $800. A main line backing up into the house is $550 to $1,650. Where the clog is and how far down it sits moves the number inside that range.
Better not. The strong ones can sit in the trap, damage older pipe, and splash back on whoever opens the drain next. Try a plunger on a sink or tub, and if that doesn’t move it, call.
