What’s different in Stafford

Stafford ducts carry heat pump air most of the year, from Aquia Harbour to Embrey Mill.

Close to six Stafford owners in ten heat with electricity, and in Aquia Harbour the Census finds about 97 in 100. That almost always means a heat pump, which moves air differently from a furnace: cooler supply air, longer cycles, the blower turning for hours on a winter evening. More hours of air through the same ducts carries more of the house’s dust past the filter and onto the duct walls.

Stafford sits between two weather stations that disagree about winter. The Marine Corps air station at Quantico, 8 miles northeast of the courthouse, averages about 4,000 heating degree days a year; the Fredericksburg station, 10 miles south-southwest, about 4,300, with 101 freezing nights to Quantico’s 76. Both log 88 degree July afternoons, so a Stafford air handler gets few weeks off.

Four in ten Stafford homes went up in the 1980s and 1990s, and Aquia Harbour’s typical owner house dates from 1984. A heat pump house that age has likely had its air handler replaced at least once, while the trunk lines and the branch runs to each room are still the builder’s. Every swap opens the duct connections at the cabinet, and the photos show whether they were sealed back up or left gapped.

Another four in ten went up after 2000. Embrey Mill, east of Mine Road, mixes townhouses with single-family houses, and around the courthouse the typical owner home is from 2005, with more homes rented than owned. A newer two-story house usually runs flexible duct across the attic to the bedrooms. In a rental the owner decides, and an empty house between leases is the easy time.

What it costs

What duct cleaning costs in Stafford.

The same price book as our air duct cleaning page, for a home up to 2,000 square feet on one system. We look first: the tech takes a cover off, puts a camera in and photographs what’s in your ducts, then shows you, so you see their current condition before you decide. No charge, including when yours are fine. Then you get the price in writing, then we clean.

  • Return Air Duct Cleaning$298
  • Whole Home Air Duct Cleaning$598, regularly $798
  • Whole Home Air Duct Cleaning with ActivePure Air Scrubber$1,798
  • Dryer Vent Cleaning, on its own$298
  • Dryer Vent Cleaning, added to a duct cleaning$199

A second system bills at 90 percent of the tier, because it’s isolated and cleaned on its own. The calculator on our air duct cleaning page does the arithmetic for a bigger house.

The dryer vent cleaning is the yearly one, and it’s in Comfort+ membership at $199 a year along with a water heater flush with a sewer camera inspection, a heating maintenance visit and a cooling maintenance visit.

When it’s worth doing

When duct cleaning is worth it in Stafford.

A burnt dust smell on the first cold night

When a Stafford cold snap pushes a heat pump onto its backup electric strips, dust that settled on them since spring burns off. Once a season is normal. If the smell comes back every time the strips kick on, dust is getting into the air handler, and that cabinet is worth photographing.

The house is new to you, not new

A 2005 house has had twenty years of filter changes, some of them missed, and the system may have run while the drywall went up. Nobody has looked inside since.

You just bought the place

You don’t know whether the last owners had three cats or ever took a register cover off. Most new owners want it done once, early, so they know what they’re starting with.

Choosing who cleans them

How to pick the best duct cleaning company in Stafford.

Questions to ask anybody who quotes you, us included.

  1. Will they photograph the joints at the air handler?

In a 1980s Aquia Harbour house on its second or third air handler, the joints at the new cabinet are the ones most often left unsealed. Ask whether the camera looks there; a gap at that spot pulls air from a garage, a crawl space or an attic into the system.

  2. Do they look before they quote?

Ask whether they’ll put a camera in and show you photos of what’s inside first. A price given at the door, sight unseen, is a price for the average house, not yours.

  3. Do they clean the returns, or only the supply vents?

The returns are the big grilles that pull air back to the system, and they’re the side that collects dust. A job that only counts supply registers leaves half the system alone.

  4. Is the price for the whole system, in writing?

Ask what it covers: every supply and return, the main trunk, the blower compartment. The $59 mailbox coupon covers getting somebody into the attic.

What our customers say.

★★★★★
Moises and SwiftPro were excellent. They cleaned my dryer duct and repaired an area that had become disconnected and was therefore posing a fire hazard. Moises was punctual, friendly, and even went the extra mile to help me briefly with another small household project.

Questions

Duct cleaning questions from Stafford.

Do you clean ducts out in 22556, past Garrisonville?

Yes. Toward Lake Arrowhead and Rock Hill Church Road the lots get bigger and more houses burn propane, but the visit and the price stay the same: photos first, then $598 for Whole Home Air Duct Cleaning on one system up to 2,000 square feet.

What time of year is best for duct cleaning in Stafford?

The shoulder weeks, when neither heat nor cooling runs much. By the station normals, Stafford’s last freezing night usually falls between late March and early April and the first in early November, so April, May and October are the easy months to shut the system off and open it up.

How much does air duct cleaning cost in Stafford?

$598 for Whole Home Air Duct Cleaning, regularly $798, on a home up to 2,000 square feet with one system, $298 for Return Air Duct Cleaning, and $1,798 with an ActivePure air scrubber installed. A dryer vent is $298 on its own or $199 added to a duct cleaning.

Is it worth it?

Sometimes, and the camera photos are how you find out. If the duct walls are furred over, cleaning takes that out of the loop your air runs through, and the before and after are obvious. If the metal is clean, it isn’t worth doing and we’ll say so. The EPA’s position is that routine cleaning hasn’t been shown to prevent health problems, so we don’t sell it that way.
