Orlean ductwork carries the winter, in farm lot houses and old village wings alike.
The co-op weather station called Warrenton 3 SE, our nearest source of long-term normals, logs about 4,685 heating degree days in a typical year and about 1,018 cooling degree days. Put plainly, heating outweighs cooling here more than four to one. Around the village a little over half the occupied homes heat with electricity, usually a heat pump moving air through the same ducts from fall into April. The returns, the big grilles that pull room air back to the system, do their dirtiest work in the cold months, so that’s where our camera goes in first.
Most Orlean houses are younger than the crossroads. In the Census block group centered on the village every home is a detached house, and about two in three were built from 1970 through 1999, usually with sheet-metal trunks below the first floor and flexible branches to the rooms. Fauquier County’s village plan warns that steep ground along Thumb Run and Cabin Branch can sit shallow on bedrock, which makes a basement hard to dig, so some houses there carry their ducts in a crawlspace, where a loose return joint draws in dust every time the blower starts.
In the old village the ductwork arrived last. The National Register nomination for the Orlean Historic District describes houses that grew in pieces on stone foundations: a log room from about 1795, a stone addition in 1812, a frame section built to join them. Central heating and cooling came much later, and the runs went wherever they’d fit: up a closet, across an attic floor, under a later wing. The photos show which stretches we can clean and which can’t be reached without opening a wall.
On June 22, 2022, the National Weather Service estimated gusts of 80 to 90 mph along a path that reached Orlean, with thousands of trees down and homes left with shingle and siding damage. If a storm or its roof repair opened your attic, an attic duct run can take in wet insulation and debris through a crushed section, and the camera finds it.

The same price book as our air duct cleaning page, for a home up to 2,000 square feet on one system. The dryer vent cleaning is the yearly one, and it’s in Comfort+ membership at $199 a year along with a water heater flush with a sewer camera inspection, a heating maintenance visit and a cooling maintenance visit.
When duct cleaning is worth it in Orlean.
A hot dusty smell the first cold night
Summer dust on a heat pump’s backup heat strips burns off the first time they run. Fauquier County sets its winter design temperature at 17 degrees, and on nights near that the strips come on. A smell that lingers, or a puff of grey at the registers, means it’s time for the camera look.
Nobody remembers the last time
Which is most houses. Nobody opens a duct, so it never comes up until somebody looks.
You just bought the place
You don’t know whether the last owners had three cats or ever took a register cover off. Most new owners want it done once, early, so they know what they’re starting with.
How to pick the best duct cleaning company in Orlean.
Questions to ask anybody who quotes you, us included.
Do they ask where your ducts run?
Around Orlean it can be a basement, a crawlspace or an attic, sometimes all three in one house. A quote that never asks is a guess.
Do they look before they quote?
Ask whether they’ll put a camera in and show you photos of what’s inside first. A price given at the door, sight unseen, is a price for the average house, not yours.
Do they clean the returns, or only the supply vents?
The returns are the big grilles that pull air back to the system, and they’re the side that collects dust. A job that only counts supply registers leaves half the system alone.
Is the price for the whole system, in writing?
Ask what it covers: every supply and return, the main trunk, the blower compartment. The $59 mailbox coupon covers getting somebody into the attic.

Duct cleaning questions from Orlean.
My house has a heat pump and a propane furnace. Is that one system or two?
Usually one: the heat pump’s indoor coil sits on top of the furnace, and both share a blower and the same ducts. It’s two when there are two air handlers, often one in the basement and one in the attic, each on its own thermostat, and each is cleaned and priced on its own.
How much does air duct cleaning cost in Orlean?
$598 for Whole Home Air Duct Cleaning, regularly $798, on a home up to 2,000 square feet with one system, $298 for Return Air Duct Cleaning, and $1,798 with an ActivePure air scrubber installed. A dryer vent is $298 on its own or $199 added to a duct cleaning.
Is it worth it?
Sometimes, and the camera photos are how you find out. If the duct walls are furred over, cleaning takes that out of the loop your air runs through, and the before and after are obvious. If the metal is clean, it isn’t worth doing and we’ll say so. The EPA’s position is that routine cleaning hasn’t been shown to prevent health problems, so we don’t sell it that way.
