What moves the price is the model and the path to it: a bypass model on an open basement furnace with a water line close by is the simple end, a fan-powered model in a tight closet with a long run for water and a drain is the other.

If the house already has a humidifier that stopped, we look at it first. Often it’s a crusted water panel, a closed saddle valve or a control that lost its wiring, and that’s a repair, not a new unit.

What’s different in Orlean

Big country houses with two systems mean one humidifier covers half the house.

Orlean has no Census area of its own, so the numbers come from the Marshall ZIP, 20115, around it. They describe wide lots: about eight homes in ten detached and a fifth of them older than 1960. Houses on country roads like these tend to grow by additions, and an addition often brought its own heating and cooling.

That’s what decides a humidifier out here. It works on the one system it’s mounted on. A house with a basement furnace under the main floor and an attic air handler over the bedrooms has two systems, and a unit on one leaves the other side dry. We learn how the house is split before we say one unit or two.

Around two homes in three are on heat pumps, one in five on propane, and a few on wood or something else. If a wood stove is the real winter heat and the system mostly idles, the humidifier hardly runs and may not be worth putting in.

In a spread-out house the nearest water line can be a long way from the furnace, and a line crossing an unheated crawlspace has to be protected from freezing. We walk that path first, because it often picks the system the humidifier ends up on.

Orlean

Orlean’s own ZIP, 20128, is post office boxes only, so the Census Bureau maps no area for it. These are ZIP 20115 as a whole, the Marshall ZIP area Orlean sits in, Marshall included.

  • Median home built1986 Census
  • Built before 1980about 4 in 10 Census
  • Built since 2000about 2 in 10 Census
  • Most homes aresingle-family houses, about 8 in 10 Census
  • Heated withelectricity, about 6 in 10 Census
  • Rentedabout 3 in 10 Census
  • Houses from the 80s and 90s often came with a builder’s humidifier on the furnace, and many of those are still on the duct, switched off.
  • Most homes here are detached houses with the furnace in a basement or utility room, which usually leaves room for a bypass model on the ductwork.

The signs

When a Orlean house is too dry in winter.

The addition is always the dry end

In a house that grew in stages, the newest wing is usually on its own system and its floors are the ones that open up first. Ask which side your static is worst on. Walk to the far bedroom on a January morning and touch the doorknob; the side that bites is the side that needs the unit.

Static every time you touch a doorknob

A zap off every light switch in January means the air in the house is well under 30 percent. Outdoor winter air holds little water, and heating it dries it further.

Floors and trim open up gaps

Wood gives up water in dry air. Gaps between floorboards, a cabinet door that sticks, or a piano that won’t hold its tuning through winter all point the same way.

Choosing who does it

How to pick who installs a humidifier in Orlean.

Questions to ask anybody who quotes you one, us included.

  1. Did they count your systems before quoting?

Ask how many units the house has and which one the humidifier will go on. A quote that doesn’t say is a quote for half the house.

  2. Did they ask where the water and the drain come from?

A humidifier needs a water line and, for most models, a drain. Whoever looks for both before quoting is the one who won’t surprise you on install day.

  3. Did they say which kind, and why?

A bypass model, a fan-powered model and a steam model each suit different systems. Ask why theirs fits your furnace or heat pump, not just what it costs.

Excellent HVAC service for a fair and reasonable price. Moises Rojas fixed my home’s whole house humidifier, which I had no idea wasn’t working for over two years since moving into this house, and now the air in my home is very comfortable.

Questions

Humidifier questions from Orlean.

Do I need two humidifiers for two systems?

Only if both halves are dry. Many families spend the evening in one end of the house, and one well-placed unit does that end well. If the kitchen wing is the part everyone lives in, start there.

Can the water line run through the crawlspace?

It can, insulated and kept off the outside walls. Otherwise we put the unit on the system with the shorter, warmer run.

How much is a whole-home humidifier in Orlean?

It’s priced at your house, in writing, because the model and the work depend on your system, your ducts and where the water line is. If you have one that stopped working, the diagnostic visit is $99.

What humidity should the house be at in winter?

The EPA says keep indoor humidity between 30 and 50 percent. On the coldest nights we run it nearer the low end so windows don’t sweat, and an Aprilaire with an outdoor sensor turns itself down for you.
