What moves the price is the model and the path to it: a bypass model on an open basement furnace with a water line close by is the simple end, a fan-powered model in a tight closet with a long run for water and a drain is the other.

If the house already has a humidifier that stopped, we look at it first. Often it’s a crusted water panel, a closed saddle valve or a control that lost its wiring, and that’s a repair, not a new unit.

What’s different in Purcellville

Purcellville is half old grid, half new streets, and mostly heat pumps.

Half of Purcellville’s owner homes went up after 2000 and about one in eight dates from before 1960, with the gap filled by the 1980s and 1990s. The old grid downtown, along Main and 21st Street, has houses with real air leaks. Newer neighborhoods such as Village Case are tight. You could put the same humidifier in each and get static in one house and wet windows in the other, so the target setting is the first thing we adjust.

Only one owner in twenty here has gas. Close to half heat with electricity and about a third use propane. For a humidifier that is a vote for fan-powered Aprilaire units on heat pumps and bypass units on propane furnaces. The surprise for people moving from the suburbs is that a heat pump’s air is cooler than a gas furnace’s, and a model sized for the older kind of heat underperforms on it.

Townhouses are more than one in five owner homes, which is a lot for a town this size. A townhouse furnace tends to sit in a closet or a utility corner, and a humidifier needs space on the supply duct, a water line and a drain. Some closets have room, some need the water line run a long way, and in a few the unit simply won’t fit. We measure before we quote.

The Town of Purcellville publishes no hardness figure in its water reports, so we can’t tell you a number. What we can tell you is that a pad that crusts in one season is a sign of mineral-heavy water, and it needs changing more often. If an older humidifier stopped working, the $99 visit finds out whether a new pad would fix it.

  • Median home built2001 Census
  • Built before 1980about 2 in 10 Census
  • Built since 2000about 5 in 10 Census
  • Most homes aresingle-family houses, about 7 in 10 Census
  • Heated withelectricity, about 5 in 10 Census
  • Rentedabout 1 in 10 Census
  • Newer houses are built tighter, so a smaller humidifier holds the number and the outdoor sensor matters more, to keep the windows dry.
  • Most homes here are detached houses with the furnace in a basement or utility room, which usually leaves room for a bypass model on the ductwork.

The signs

When a Purcellville house is too dry in winter.

A drafty Main Street house in February

Doors that stick and trim that pulls back from the wall are more common in the older houses closer to downtown. Newer streets get static first.

Static every time you touch a doorknob

A zap off every light switch in January means the air in the house is well under 30 percent. Outdoor winter air holds little water, and heating it dries it further.

Floors and trim open up gaps

Wood gives up water in dry air. Gaps between floorboards, a cabinet door that sticks, or a piano that won’t hold its tuning through winter all point the same way.

Choosing who does it

How to pick who installs a humidifier in Purcellville.

Questions to ask anybody who quotes you one, us included.

  1. Do they know which houses have no gas?

In Purcellville the fuel decides the model. Ask which humidifier goes on a heat pump and why, because the wrong answer here costs you all winter.

  2. Did they ask where the water and the drain come from?

A humidifier needs a water line and, for most models, a drain. Whoever looks for both before quoting is the one who won’t surprise you on install day.

  3. Did they say which kind, and why?

A bypass model, a fan-powered model and a steam model each suit different systems. Ask why theirs fits your furnace or heat pump, not just what it costs.

Questions

Humidifier questions from Purcellville.

Is a townhouse closet big enough for a whole-home humidifier?

Often, yes, on the supply duct above the furnace. It needs clear duct to mount on, a cold-water pipe and a place to drain, and we check all three on the first visit.

Should I set it lower in a new house?

Yes. A tight house builds humidity quickly and starts sweating at windows when it’s cold, so start near 30 percent and move up in mild weather.

How much is a whole-home humidifier in Purcellville?

It’s priced at your house, in writing, because the model and the work depend on your system, your ducts and where the water line is. If you have one that stopped working, the diagnostic visit is $99.

What humidity should the house be at in winter?

The EPA says keep indoor humidity between 30 and 50 percent. On the coldest nights we run it nearer the low end so windows don’t sweat, and an Aprilaire with an outdoor sensor turns itself down for you.
