Old glass tells you when to turn it down
Original windows in a Historic District house are often single pane. When the corners of the glass start to bead up, the humidifier is set a few points too high for the weather.

What moves the price is the model and the path to it: a bypass model on an open basement furnace with a water line close by is the simple end, a fan-powered model in a tight closet with a long run for water and a drain is the other.
If the house already has a humidifier that stopped, we look at it first. Often it’s a crusted water panel, a closed saddle valve or a control that lost its wiring, and that’s a repair, not a new unit.
What’s different in The Plains
Every property inside the town limits of The Plains is in the Town’s Historic District, and improvements there go past an Architectural Review Board. A humidifier is mostly an inside job, a unit on the ductwork and a line to the water, so it rarely touches the review. The exceptions are the parts that reach outside: an outdoor sensor, a drain that exits through a wall. We’d call the Town before drilling one.
The ZIP around it, 20198, is mostly detached homes, about three in ten built before 1960 and a median of 1983. Electricity heats about six owner homes in ten and propane about a quarter. Heat pumps take a fan-powered model, and propane furnaces a bypass one.a bypass one.
The older houses are where the system’s location matters most. Nobody is cutting new duct runs through old plaster and framing, so the humidifier goes on the equipment you already have, wherever it’s been put. A furnace in a damp stone-walled basement and one in an attic closet are two different jobs.
Town water comes from two deep wells and a storage tank, and the 2025 water report prints no hardness figure. Houses outside the town limits mostly use their own wells. A crusted pad is the usual sign that the water is hard, and a cheap thing to check at the start of each heating season. Do it when you first turn the heat on, not after the first dry week in December.
By the numbers
From the Census Bureau’s 2020 to 2024 survey. Median year built and heat count owner-occupied homes only.
ZIP 20198 as a whole, the Town included: its own homes are too few for steady Census figures.
The signs
Original windows in a Historic District house are often single pane. When the corners of the glass start to bead up, the humidifier is set a few points too high for the weather.
A zap off every light switch in January means the air in the house is well under 30 percent. Outdoor winter air holds little water, and heating it dries it further.
Wood gives up water in dry air. Gaps between floorboards, a cabinet door that sticks, or a piano that won’t hold its tuning through winter all point the same way.

Choosing who does it
Questions to ask anybody who quotes you one, us included.
Ask whether any part of the install passes through an outside wall, and who checks with the Town if it does. An installer who hasn’t heard of the review hasn’t worked here.
A humidifier needs a water line and, for most models, a drain. Whoever looks for both before quoting is the one who won’t surprise you on install day.
A bypass model, a fan-powered model and a steam model each suit different systems. Ask why theirs fits your furnace or heat pump, not just what it costs.

Moisés’ HVAC work is exceptional. He installed a return that completely resolved a static build up problem we had. He also installed a whole house humidifier that we are very pleased with. I’d trust SwiftPro for any of my HVAC needs!

Questions
Generally not if it’s all inside. A drain or sensor through an exterior wall is the part to ask the Town about before we drill.
Not a ducted one. A house heated by a stove or baseboards has no air system to carry the moisture, and a tabletop unit is the answer there.
It’s priced at your house, in writing, because the model and the work depend on your system, your ducts and where the water line is. If you have one that stopped working, the diagnostic visit is $99.
The EPA says keep indoor humidity between 30 and 50 percent. On the coldest nights we run it nearer the low end so windows don’t sweat, and an Aprilaire with an outdoor sensor turns itself down for you.
