What moves the price is the model and the path to it: a bypass model on an open basement furnace with a water line close by is the simple end, a fan-powered model in a tight closet with a long run for water and a drain is the other.

If the house already has a humidifier that stopped, we look at it first. Often it’s a crusted water panel, a closed saddle valve or a control that lost its wiring, and that’s a repair, not a new unit.

What’s different in Remington

Remington’s old town houses and rentals change who decides on a humidifier.

Remington is one of the older places in the county. Across ZIP 22734 close to four owner homes in ten date from before 1960, and inside the town limits the share looks higher, though the town alone is too small for firm Census numbers. A house that old trades air with the outdoors all day, so January empties it of moisture quickly.

Three owners in four here heat with electricity, which in most of these houses means a heat pump. We lean toward the fan-powered Aprilaire on those. Propane covers about one home in nine, and a propane furnace can carry the simpler bypass model.

Rentals run high here, about four homes in ten across the ZIP. A whole-home humidifier gets plumbed into equipment the landlord owns, so the landlord makes that call. so the landlord makes that call, and a short written note from the owner saves everyone a second trip. A renter with a dry bedroom is better off with a tabletop unit in that room, and the owner can call us about the whole-house kind. and the owner can call us about the whole-house kind, with the diagnostic visit $99 if an existing one has stopped.

Some of the homes are townhouses and small apartment buildings, about one in five together. A townhouse closet with a tight air handler may have no room for a unit, and a drain has to go somewhere. We look at the closet and the nearest line before we say yes.

By the numbers

The Fauquier County side

ZIP 22734 as a whole, the Town included: its own homes are too few for steady Census figures. About one home in fourteen in this ZIP is in Culpeper County.

  • Median home built1989 Census
  • Built before 1980about 5 in 10 Census
  • Built since 2000about 2 in 10 Census
  • Most homes aresingle-family houses, about 8 in 10 Census
  • Heated withelectricity, about 7 in 10 Census
  • Rentedabout 4 in 10 Census
  • Houses from the 80s and 90s often came with a builder’s humidifier on the furnace, and many of those are still on the duct, switched off.
  • Most homes here are detached houses with the furnace in a basement or utility room, which usually leaves room for a bypass model on the ductwork.

The signs

When a Remington house is too dry in winter.

Cold, drafty rooms and hardwood that moves

In an older house the floors follow the weather. If a gap opens between boards every winter and closes again by July, the house is drying out faster than the wood can take it.

Static every time you touch a doorknob

A zap off every light switch in January means the air in the house is well under 30 percent. Outdoor winter air holds little water, and heating it dries it further.

Floors and trim open up gaps

Wood gives up water in dry air. Gaps between floorboards, a cabinet door that sticks, or a piano that won’t hold its tuning through winter all point the same way.

Choosing who does it

How to pick who installs a humidifier in Remington.

Questions to ask anybody who quotes you one, us included.

  1. Who has to approve the install?

If you rent, the owner does. If you own a townhouse, the association may. Ask before you get a quote, so the quote is for something that can happen.

  2. Did they ask where the water and the drain come from?

A humidifier needs a water line and, for most models, a drain. Whoever looks for both before quoting is the one who won’t surprise you on install day.

  3. Did they say which kind, and why?

A bypass model, a fan-powered model and a steam model each suit different systems. Ask why theirs fits your furnace or heat pump, not just what it costs.

Excellent HVAC service for a fair and reasonable price. Moises Rojas fixed my home’s whole house humidifier, which I had no idea wasn’t working for over two years since moving into this house, and now the air in my home is very comfortable.

Questions

Humidifier questions from Remington.

I rent. Can I get a whole-home humidifier?

With the owner’s okay, yes. It goes on the furnace or air handler and stays with the house when you leave, so it’s the owner’s call.

Will it help old single-pane windows?

It can, if it’s set too high. Old glass is where the moisture shows up first, so keep the setting low in a house with its original windows. If the glass beads up in a corner, turn the target down a few points and wipe it dry; it will tell you the right number by the next cold snap.

How much is a whole-home humidifier in Remington?

It’s priced at your house, in writing, because the model and the work depend on your system, your ducts and where the water line is. If you have one that stopped working, the diagnostic visit is $99.

What humidity should the house be at in winter?

The EPA says keep indoor humidity between 30 and 50 percent. On the coldest nights we run it nearer the low end so windows don’t sweat, and an Aprilaire with an outdoor sensor turns itself down for you.
