The piano and the floor tell you first
A piano that drifts out of tune by February, or a hardwood floor that opens a gap between boards, usually means the house sits well under 30 percent long before you feel it.

What moves the price is the model and the path to it: a bypass model on an open basement furnace with a water line close by is the simple end, a fan-powered model in a tight closet with a long run for water and a drain is the other.
If the house already has a humidifier that stopped, we look at it first. Often it’s a crusted water panel, a closed saddle valve or a control that lost its wiring, and that’s a repair, not a new unit.
What’s different in Amissville
Amissville is detached houses on big lots, and the ages are all over the map. About one owner home in eight in ZIP 20106 went up before 1960, more than a third before 1980, and roughly three in ten since 2000. The old ones leak winter air at the sills and window frames and are dry by December. The newer ones hold what they get. A setting that suits the farmhouse down the road will fog the glass in a 2005 build.
Propane heats about four homes in ten here and electricity a bit over a third. On a propane furnace a bypass Aprilaire borrows the hot supply air. Heat pump air is only lukewarm, so a fan-powered unit earns its place there. Plenty of houses have both, a heat pump most of the winter and a furnace for the nights it gives up, and we mount the humidifier on whichever one runs the most hours.
About one owner home in eighteen heats with wood or something else. A stove dries the room it sits in and leaves the rest cold, and a humidifier on the ducts can’t reach a room the ducts skip. If the stove does the heating and the system only backs it up, a whole-home unit may not earn its keep, and we’d tell you that at the visit.
Many houses out here drink from a drilled well, and well water carries whatever the ground has in it. Minerals tend to crust a humidifier pad quicker than town water would, so plan on swapping it more often than the box says, and ask about a sediment filter on the supply line.
By the numbers
From the Census Bureau’s 2020 to 2024 survey. Median year built and heat count owner-occupied homes only.
ZIP 20106 as a whole: about half its homes are in Culpeper County, about four in ten in Rappahannock County, where the village is, and a few in Fauquier County.
The signs
A piano that drifts out of tune by February, or a hardwood floor that opens a gap between boards, usually means the house sits well under 30 percent long before you feel it.
A zap off every light switch in January means the air in the house is well under 30 percent. Outdoor winter air holds little water, and heating it dries it further.
Wood gives up water in dry air. Gaps between floorboards, a cabinet door that sticks, or a piano that won’t hold its tuning through winter all point the same way.

Choosing who does it
Questions to ask anybody who quotes you one, us included.
A humidifier needs a water line and a drain near the furnace. On well water, ask about a sediment filter, how often the pad gets changed, and who comes back to do it.
A humidifier needs a water line and, for most models, a drain. Whoever looks for both before quoting is the one who won’t surprise you on install day.
A bypass model, a fan-powered model and a steam model each suit different systems. Ask why theirs fits your furnace or heat pump, not just what it costs.

Moisés’ HVAC work is exceptional. He installed a return that completely resolved a static build up problem we had. He also installed a whole house humidifier that we are very pleased with. I’d trust SwiftPro for any of my HVAC needs!
Questions
Yes. A fan-powered model runs off the air handler’s own blower instead of leaning on hot air, which a heat pump doesn’t make. It runs more hours than it would on a propane furnace to hold the same setting.
Only if the ducts carry that heat to the rooms you live in. If the stove room is the only dry one, a tabletop unit in that room makes more sense than a ducted system.
It’s priced at your house, in writing, because the model and the work depend on your system, your ducts and where the water line is. If you have one that stopped working, the diagnostic visit is $99.
The EPA says keep indoor humidity between 30 and 50 percent. On the coldest nights we run it nearer the low end so windows don’t sweat, and an Aprilaire with an outdoor sensor turns itself down for you.
