Cabinet doors that stop closing
Kitchen cabinets and paneled doors from the 1960s move with the seasons. When they start sticking in December and loosening in July, the winter air in the house is far too dry.

What moves the price is the model and the path to it: a bypass model on an open basement furnace with a water line close by is the simple end, a fan-powered model in a tight closet with a long run for water and a drain is the other.
If the house already has a humidifier that stopped, we look at it first. Often it’s a crusted water panel, a closed saddle valve or a control that lost its wiring, and that’s a repair, not a new unit.
What’s different in Annandale
Half the homes in Annandale are detached, and the median one was built in 1967. Eight in ten went up before 1980, before anyone worried about air sealing. These houses leak at the rim joists, the attic hatch and every window, so the winter air coming in is cold and almost dry. They need a humidifier with some real output, not the smallest one in the catalog.
Seven in ten owners here heat with gas, so a bypass model on the furnace is the usual fit. The furnace is typically in the basement or a lower-level utility room, with the water line close by and often a floor drain, which makes for the easy kind of install. About a quarter of owners run electric heat, and those homes lean toward the fan-powered model.
Split-levels have a quirk. Warm, moist air rises to the upper bedroom level while the lower family room stays drier, so the humidifier setting tracks the upper floor. We aim for the number where the bedrooms feel right and the glass stays clear, then check the lower level doesn’t lag far behind.
Plenty of Annandale houses have had a family room or kitchen added on, sometimes with its own small system. A humidifier on the original furnace won’t reach the addition’s ducts. We check how the addition is heated before promising anything. Ask any neighbor on Little River Turnpike or in Wakefield and you will hear the same story: a house that was comfortable in October and crackling by Christmas.
Neighborhood by neighborhood
Census figures for the owner-occupied homes in each place, and the humidifier that usually suits houses like them.
| Place | Median home built | Most homes are | Heated with | What usually fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Annandale | 1967 | single-family houses, about 5 in 10 | gas, about 7 in 10 | A bypass model with more output, for a draftier house. |
| Wakefield | 1968 | single-family houses, nearly all | gas, about 8 in 10 | A bypass model with more output, for a draftier house. |
| Woodburn | 1968 | single-family houses, about 4 in 10 | gas, about 6 in 10 | A bypass model with more output, for a draftier house. |

The signs
Kitchen cabinets and paneled doors from the 1960s move with the seasons. When they start sticking in December and loosening in July, the winter air in the house is far too dry.
A zap off every light switch in January means the air in the house is well under 30 percent. Outdoor winter air holds little water, and heating it dries it further.
Wood gives up water in dry air. Gaps between floorboards, a cabinet door that sticks, or a piano that won’t hold its tuning through winter all point the same way.

Choosing who does it
Questions to ask anybody who quotes you one, us included.
If part of the house has its own furnace or heat pump, one humidifier covers only that part. Ask which zones the quote reaches before you sign.
A humidifier needs a water line and, for most models, a drain. Whoever looks for both before quoting is the one who won’t surprise you on install day.
A bypass model, a fan-powered model and a steam model each suit different systems. Ask why theirs fits your furnace or heat pump, not just what it costs.

Moisés’ HVAC work is exceptional. He installed a return that completely resolved a static build up problem we had. He also installed a whole house humidifier that we are very pleased with. I’d trust SwiftPro for any of my HVAC needs!

Questions
If one system heats the whole house, yes, though the top level gets the most moisture. A second system means the humidifier reaches only the part it serves.
A rusty water line or a pad caked white usually means replace the part, not the whole unit. The $99 visit sorts out which.
It’s priced at your house, in writing, because the model and the work depend on your system, your ducts and where the water line is. If you have one that stopped working, the diagnostic visit is $99.
The EPA says keep indoor humidity between 30 and 50 percent. On the coldest nights we run it nearer the low end so windows don’t sweat, and an Aprilaire with an outdoor sensor turns itself down for you.
