What moves the price is the model and the path to it: a bypass model on an open basement furnace with a water line close by is the simple end, a fan-powered model in a tight closet with a long run for water and a drain is the other.

If the house already has a humidifier that stopped, we look at it first. Often it’s a crusted water panel, a closed saddle valve or a control that lost its wiring, and that’s a repair, not a new unit.

What’s different in Midland

Midland has real old farmhouses, and a humidifier has to fit around them.

One in five owner homes in Midland’s ZIP was built before 1960, the largest old-house share of any of our nearby country towns. They are farmhouses, tenant houses and village homes with tall plaster walls, drafty windows and heating that was added decades after the house was framed. Dry winter air is not a new problem for them.

In a house like that, the system’s location decides everything. Many have the furnace in a cellar corner or a crawlspace with ducts squeezed through where they could fit. We do not break into plaster to run new ducts for a humidifier. We look at what is there, and if the plenum is reachable, we mount it there. If it is not, we say so, and a smaller option may be the better answer.

Heat is electric in nearly six of ten homes and propane in a third. A heat pump needs the fan-powered Aprilaire, since its supply air is cool. A propane furnace behaves like gas, so a bypass unit is the simple fit. A few houses have both a heat pump and a woodstove or fireplace, and we plan for the draw that adds.

People in Midland usually call about wood: a piano going out of tune, a pine floor opening, antique furniture splitting a joint. That is dry air at work, and it is what a whole-home humidifier is for. See how it works, and the $99 visit covers one that stopped.

The signs

When a Midland house is too dry in winter.

Antiques and pianos

Walnut chests, rocking chairs and the upright piano in the parlor all came through humid Fauquier summers fine. January in a heated farmhouse is what loosens their glue lines, and steady moisture through the season keeps them tight.

Static every time you touch a doorknob

A zap off every light switch in January means the air in the house is well under 30 percent. Outdoor winter air holds little water, and heating it dries it further.

Floors and trim open up gaps

Wood gives up water in dry air. Gaps between floorboards, a cabinet door that sticks, or a piano that won’t hold its tuning through winter all point the same way.

Choosing who does it

How to pick who installs a humidifier in Midland.

Questions to ask anybody who quotes you one, us included.

  1. Will you cut into my plaster?

Ask to see where the water line, the drain and the unit itself will go before anyone drills. In a cellar or crawlspace, a good plan uses the plenum already there and leaves the plaster alone.

  2. Did they ask where the water and the drain come from?

A humidifier needs a water line and, for most models, a drain. Whoever looks for both before quoting is the one who won’t surprise you on install day.

  3. Did they say which kind, and why?

A bypass model, a fan-powered model and a steam model each suit different systems. Ask why theirs fits your furnace or heat pump, not just what it costs.

Moisés’ HVAC work is exceptional. He installed a return that completely resolved a static build up problem we had. He also installed a whole house humidifier that we are very pleased with. I’d trust SwiftPro for any of my HVAC needs!

Questions

Humidifier questions from Midland.

Is my old farmhouse too leaky for a humidifier to work?

It works, but it takes more output and a lower expectation. A very drafty house will not hold a high number, and trying to force one wets the windows.

Does propane heat change anything?

Very little. A propane burner sends warm air up the ducts much as natural gas would, so the plain bypass Aprilaire usually suits it, and the yard tank never enters into it.

How much is a whole-home humidifier in Midland?

It’s priced at your house, in writing, because the model and the work depend on your system, your ducts and where the water line is. If you have one that stopped working, the diagnostic visit is $99.

What humidity should the house be at in winter?

The EPA says keep indoor humidity between 30 and 50 percent. On the coldest nights we run it nearer the low end so windows don’t sweat, and an Aprilaire with an outdoor sensor turns itself down for you.
