Which rooms are driest
Additions and far bedrooms get thinner airflow, so they feel the dry air first. Look at those rooms to judge whether one humidifier on the main system is enough.

What moves the price is the model and the path to it: a bypass model on an open basement furnace with a water line close by is the simple end, a fan-powered model in a tight closet with a long run for water and a drain is the other.
If the house already has a humidifier that stopped, we look at it first. Often it’s a crusted water panel, a closed saddle valve or a control that lost its wiring, and that’s a repair, not a new unit.
What’s different in Catharpin
Catharpin is a few hundred owner homes, all detached, and the Census margin on them is wide, so take the shares as rough. They still tell a clear story. A fifth of the houses predate 1960, four in ten predate 1980, and most of the rest were built on acreage in the eighties, nineties and after. Country houses here tend to grow: a family room added in 1994, a garage turned into an office.
Each addition is another place for dry air to hide. A room built onto an older house often has its own duct branch, or its own small heat pump, and gets less air than the main house. A humidifier on the main system humidifies what that system reaches. We walk the house first and ask which rooms feel driest, and that tells us whether one unit covers it.
Heating is nearly half electric and a third propane. Heat pump homes get the fan-powered Aprilaire, since cool supply air cannot carry vapor to a bypass unit. A propane furnace makes warm air like a gas one, and the bypass works. Only about one home in fourteen is on gas, so the usual city assumption about gas furnaces does not apply here.
Propane customers know the feeling of a long, cold stretch. The furnace runs more, the air dries further, and the static gets sharp by the second week. A humidifier is the answer when your hands crackle on the doorknob. The whole-home humidifier page has the models, and the $99 visit sorts out one that stopped.
The signs
Additions and far bedrooms get thinner airflow, so they feel the dry air first. Look at those rooms to judge whether one humidifier on the main system is enough.
A zap off every light switch in January means the air in the house is well under 30 percent. Outdoor winter air holds little water, and heating it dries it further.
Wood gives up water in dry air. Gaps between floorboards, a cabinet door that sticks, or a piano that won’t hold its tuning through winter all point the same way.

Choosing who does it
Questions to ask anybody who quotes you one, us included.
A humidifier quote from the driveway ignores the additions. Ask them to look at where the ducts go and which rooms the system serves.
A humidifier needs a water line and, for most models, a drain. Whoever looks for both before quoting is the one who won’t surprise you on install day.
A bypass model, a fan-powered model and a steam model each suit different systems. Ask why theirs fits your furnace or heat pump, not just what it costs.

Rich came out to give us an estimate and setup installation of a whole home humidifier. He was friendly, on-time, and very knowledgeable and made sure we were getting what would work best for our home. Highly recommend!

Questions
Only if the addition is on the same system. If it has its own heat pump or mini split, it needs its own plan, and we tell you that straight.
Not by itself. Any forced air system dries the air in cold weather, and a longer run just means a longer stretch of dry air.
It’s priced at your house, in writing, because the model and the work depend on your system, your ducts and where the water line is. If you have one that stopped working, the diagnostic visit is $99.
The EPA says keep indoor humidity between 30 and 50 percent. On the coldest nights we run it nearer the low end so windows don’t sweat, and an Aprilaire with an outdoor sensor turns itself down for you.
Ready when you are
