What moves the price is the model and the path to it: a bypass model on an open basement furnace with a water line close by is the simple end, a fan-powered model in a tight closet with a long run for water and a drain is the other.

If the house already has a humidifier that stopped, we look at it first. Often it’s a crusted water panel, a closed saddle valve or a control that lost its wiring, and that’s a repair, not a new unit.

What’s different in Calverton

In Calverton, the wood stove dries the house out as much as the furnace.

Calverton’s mail goes to post office boxes, so the Census figures come from the ZIP next door, 20119, which holds almost all of its homes. In that area about one owner in eight heats with wood or something other than a furnace. That is a lot of stoves, and a wood stove is a very effective way to pull the moisture out of a house.

A stove burns air from the room and sends it up the flue, and outdoor air comes in to replace it. That outdoor air is cold, and cold air holds little water. The result is a house that feels drier near the stove and in the rooms farthest from it. A whole-home humidifier on the main system evens that out, but it does not replace the stove’s work on the air, so expect to run it higher on stove days.

The main heat here is split between electric, a bit over half, and propane, closer to three in ten. We use a fan-powered Aprilaire on heat pump houses and a bypass model on propane furnaces. Every home in the area is a detached house, so the system is in a basement, a crawlspace or a closet off the kitchen, and we choose the mount by what we find.

The median house here is from 1990, with older farmhouses and newer ones mixed in. Older ones lose more air; newer ones less. We read each house, not the ZIP code. If your furnace already has a humidifier that no longer runs, the $99 visit tells you whether it needs a pad or a replacement.

Calverton’s own ZIP, 20138, is post office boxes only, so the Census Bureau maps no area for it. These are ZIP 20119 as a whole, the Catlett ZIP area that holds nearly nine in ten of the Calverton Census place’s homes.

  • Built since 2000about 2 in 10 Census

  • Most homes here are detached houses with the furnace in a basement or utility room, which usually leaves room for a bypass model on the ductwork.

The signs

When a Calverton house is too dry in winter.

Stove days run dry

Burning wood pulls air out of the house and brings cold air in. Whatever moisture you added with a humidifier gets pulled out again, so the unit works harder on those days.

Static every time you touch a doorknob

A zap off every light switch in January means the air in the house is well under 30 percent. Outdoor winter air holds little water, and heating it dries it further.

Floors and trim open up gaps

Wood gives up water in dry air. Gaps between floorboards, a cabinet door that sticks, or a piano that won’t hold its tuning through winter all point the same way.

Choosing who does it

How to pick who installs a humidifier in Calverton.

Questions to ask anybody who quotes you one, us included.

  1. Did they ask about the wood stove?

A stove changes how much output you need and how the house behaves on cold nights. Tell them, and ask whether the plan accounts for it.

  2. Did they ask where the water and the drain come from?

A humidifier needs a water line and, for most models, a drain. Whoever looks for both before quoting is the one who won’t surprise you on install day.

  3. Did they say which kind, and why?

A bypass model, a fan-powered model and a steam model each suit different systems. Ask why theirs fits your furnace or heat pump, not just what it costs.

Moisés’ HVAC work is exceptional. He installed a return that completely resolved a static build up problem we had. He also installed a whole house humidifier that we are very pleased with. I’d trust SwiftPro for any of my HVAC needs!

Questions

Humidifier questions from Calverton.

Can a humidifier go with a wood stove?

Yes, they work independently. The humidifier sits on the furnace or heat pump duct, and the stove does its own thing. Expect to set the dial a notch higher.

Does it matter that my mail goes to a box?

Not for the work. We come to the house address. See how the install works.

How much is a whole-home humidifier in Calverton?

It’s priced at your house, in writing, because the model and the work depend on your system, your ducts and where the water line is. If you have one that stopped working, the diagnostic visit is $99.

What humidity should the house be at in winter?

The EPA says keep indoor humidity between 30 and 50 percent. On the coldest nights we run it nearer the low end so windows don’t sweat, and an Aprilaire with an outdoor sensor turns itself down for you.
