What’s different in Calverton
Calverton is a village with a small historic core and a lot of open land around it, and nobody here is on a gas main. Half the owner homes in the ZIP heat with electricity, and nearly three in ten with propane. A heat pump is the working system, and the older the house, the more likely the pump was fitted into it years after it was built.
About one owner home in six in the ZIP predates 1960. In a village house that age, the ducts were squeezed in after the fact, often through a closet and a crawlspace, and a heat pump needs more air than the furnace those ducts were first cut for. The signs are a unit that ices up, a whistle at the registers, and strips that run all day. Often it’s not the outdoor unit at all.
Wood is part of the picture too: more than one home in eight burns wood or something else as its main heat. In a house with a wood stove and a heat pump, the pump gets blamed on the first cold night because the stove gets lit instead and nobody notices the pump has stalled. If you only discover the problem when the fire dies, tell us how long it’s been.
The newer lots are a different job. About a quarter of the owner homes went up since 2000, and a pump from then has a circuit board and sensors, so the failure is a fault code, not a dead motor. Read the code off the thermostat or the board’s blinking light and send it with your call; it often tells us which part to bring.
By the numbers
From the Census Bureau’s 2020 to 2024 survey. Median year built and heat count owner-occupied homes only.
Calverton’s own ZIP, 20138, is post office boxes only, so the Census Bureau maps no area for it. These are ZIP 20119 as a whole, the Catlett ZIP area that holds nearly nine in ten of the Calverton Census place’s homes.
What you’d notice
Turn the stove down for an hour and listen. If the outdoor fan isn’t running and the house cools fast, the pump has quit and the stove has been covering for it.
When the outdoor unit stops pulling its weight, the electric strips in the air handler carry the house. The house stays warm, and the bill tells you a few weeks later. A stuck contactor is a common reason, and one of the cheapest fixes on our list.
A little frost on a cold morning is normal, and the unit melts it off every so often by running backwards for a few minutes. Ice that builds for hours and covers the whole coil usually means the defrost board, a sensor, or low refrigerant.

Choosing who fixes it
Questions worth asking anybody who comes out, us included.
A Calverton house from before 1960 has ducts that were added later. A tech who only reads refrigerant pressures can miss that the real problem is airflow.
Anyone can check on the state’s license lookup. Ours is Virginia Class A contractor license, on every van.
Every heat pump repair on our list has a range, and you hear where yours lands before a part goes in. If someone can’t give you a number until it’s done, keep looking.
An older heat pump with a refrigerant leak is often a bad repair. A good tech says so, with the repair price and the replacement price side by side.

Excellent work done honestly and efficiently. Efrain the technician was great. Was able to diagnose the problem quickly and get my older Amana gas furnace system working again.

Questions
A light frost that melts is normal defrost. Ice that stays solid, or a unit that keeps cycling into defrost, means the defrost board at $450 to $1,150 range, a sensor or low airflow. A $99 diagnostic visit tells you which.
A capacitor at $240 to $370 or a contactor at $290 to $425 usually is. If the pump predates 2010 and a refrigerant leak is the problem, we price it next to a replacement so you choose with both numbers.
That’s defrost. The unit stops the outdoor fan, runs backwards for a few minutes to melt frost off the coil, and you see steam rising. It’s normal. Ice that stays is not.
The diagnostic visit is $99. From our price book, a capacitor is $240 to $370, a contactor $290 to $425, and a defrost board $450 to $1,150. You get the number before we start.
