What’s different in Delaplane

In a propane town like Delaplane, a heat pump can quit and nobody notices until the tank runs low.

Heat pumps are the minority out here. In ZIP 20144 the Census puts electric heat, heat pumps included, in about three owner homes in ten, and tank propane in more than half. So the usual Delaplane call isn’t a house gone cold. It’s a house with both systems, where the pump is meant to carry the mild weather and a propane furnace takes the hard cold, and the pump has been down for a month before anyone finds out.

The clue is usually the tank, not the thermostat. If the propane truck came sooner than it did last winter, or the furnace seems to start every time the thermostat so much as sighs, ask whether the outdoor unit is still doing its half. A furnace carrying the whole season works fine and costs a good deal more than the pump would have.

Nearly every house in the ZIP is detached, about half went up between 1980 and 1999, and the median owner home dates to 1986. A pump that came with one of those houses, or replaced the first one, is at the age where the capacitor, the contactor and the defrost board start giving out, and those are the repairs we find most. Lots are big, so the outdoor unit often sits in a side yard under trees, where leaves pack the coil. A June 2022 storm that hit Delaplane and Marshall is a reminder to walk around the unit for fallen limbs before the cold.

On a dual fuel system the thermostat decides when the furnace takes over. That outdoor temperature is called the balance point, and a wrong setting or a bad outdoor sensor can hand the whole job to the propane for no reason, or leave the pump struggling when the furnace should step in. It looks like a failing pump, and it’s a settings fix more often than you’d expect.

What you’d notice

What a heat pump in trouble in Delaplane usually does.

Your propane bill is higher than last year’s

With a working pump and a propane furnace, the furnace should only fire on the coldest nights. If it’s running in October or on a 45 degree afternoon, the pump probably isn’t pulling its weight, and the bill is the first place you’ll see it.

Aux or emergency heat that never goes off

When the outdoor unit stops pulling its weight, the electric strips in the air handler carry the house. The house stays warm, and the bill tells you a few weeks later. A stuck contactor is a common reason, and one of the cheapest fixes on our list.

The outdoor unit is a block of ice

A little frost on a cold morning is normal, and the unit melts it off every so often by running backwards for a few minutes. Ice that builds for hours and covers the whole coil usually means the defrost board, a sensor, or low refrigerant.

Choosing who fixes it

How to pick a heat pump repair company in Delaplane.

Questions worth asking anybody who comes out, us included.

  1. Do you service the heat pump and the propane furnace in one visit?

In Delaplane that matters, because the two systems share a thermostat and a blower. A tech who only knows one half can blame the other. Ask for both checked together, with the thermostat’s switchover setting read out loud.

  2. Is the company licensed in Virginia?

Anyone can check on the state’s license lookup. Ours is Virginia Class A contractor license, on every van.

  3. Do they price the repair before they start?

Every heat pump repair on our list has a range, and you hear where yours lands before a part goes in. If someone can’t give you a number until it’s done, keep looking.

  4. Will they tell you when it’s not worth fixing?

An older heat pump with a refrigerant leak is often a bad repair. A good tech says so, with the repair price and the replacement price side by side.

Excellent work done honestly and efficiently. Efrain the technician was great. Was able to diagnose the problem quickly and get my older Amana gas furnace system working again.

Questions

Heat pump questions from Delaplane.

How do I tell whether the pump or the furnace is heating my house?

Step outside while the thermostat is calling for heat. A spinning fan and warm air from the vents means the pump is working. Silence outside with a warm house means the furnace is covering for it, and that’s worth a heat pump visit before the cold sets in.

What does it cost to find out why my Delaplane pump stopped?

The diagnostic is $99, and it covers finding the fault, not just the first part that looks suspect. A capacitor runs $240 to $370, and a thermostat swap runs $300 to $640, so on a dual fuel house the answer is often a small repair.

Why does my heat pump in Delaplane steam and go quiet in the cold?

That’s defrost. The unit stops the outdoor fan, runs backwards for a few minutes to melt frost off the coil, and you see steam rising. It’s normal. Ice that stays is not.

How much does heat pump repair cost in Delaplane?

The diagnostic visit is $99. From our price book, a capacitor is $240 to $370, a contactor $290 to $425, and a defrost board $450 to $1,150. You get the number before we start.
