The outbuilding is cold but the house is fine
On a property with two or three pumps, one cold building usually means one failed pump, not a failed system. Check that building’s thermostat and breaker first, then call us with the building named.

What’s different in Orlean
Orlean isn’t a street, it’s a stretch of farmland. The Census block group around the village covers about 26 square miles and counts 543 occupied homes, every one a house or farmhouse. Electric heat, heat pumps among it, warms 306 of them, which is better than half, with propane next. A repair call here often starts with a driveway and a gate before it gets to a unit.
Out on a working property, it is common to find more than one pump: the main house, plus a second for a workshop, an in-law suite, a converted barn or a guest cottage. Each has its own thermostat, breaker and often its own age. Tell us which building is cold. A call that says “the heat pump” on a property with three of them costs a trip to sort out.
The last week of January 2026 is the week to remember. Extreme Cold Warnings went out, the station at Hume four miles northwest logged a wind chill of 8 below, and the gauge near Marshall still showed six inches of snow on the ground on January 30 and 31. In that stretch a pump runs defrost constantly and the strips run behind it. A unit buried in drift can’t breathe, so clear snow from around it, not off the top, and leave the coil alone.
Inside the village, along Leeds Manor Road, the historic houses run back to the 1700s and 1800s, many with stone walls and low basements. A heat pump added there usually has its air handler in an odd corner and a long line set to the outdoor unit. Those long runs lose capacity if they’re kinked or under-insulated, and the pump looks weak when the pipe is the problem.
By the numbers
From the Census Bureau’s 2020 to 2024 survey. Median year built and heat count owner-occupied homes only.
Orlean’s own ZIP, 20128, is post office boxes only, so the Census Bureau maps no area for it. These are ZIP 20115 as a whole, the Marshall ZIP area Orlean sits in, Marshall included.
What you’d notice
On a property with two or three pumps, one cold building usually means one failed pump, not a failed system. Check that building’s thermostat and breaker first, then call us with the building named.
When the outdoor unit stops pulling its weight, the electric strips in the air handler carry the house. The house stays warm, and the bill tells you a few weeks later. A stuck contactor is a common reason, and one of the cheapest fixes on our list.
A little frost on a cold morning is normal, and the unit melts it off every so often by running backwards for a few minutes. Ice that builds for hours and covers the whole coil usually means the defrost board, a sensor, or low refrigerant.

Choosing who fixes it
Questions worth asking anybody who comes out, us included.
On a farm, ask the company to treat each pump as its own system. One tech stopping at the house and skipping the shop leaves half the job.
Anyone can check on the state’s license lookup. Ours is Virginia Class A contractor license, on every van.
Every heat pump repair on our list has a range, and you hear where yours lands before a part goes in. If someone can’t give you a number until it’s done, keep looking.
An older heat pump with a refrigerant leak is often a bad repair. A good tech says so, with the repair price and the replacement price side by side.

Swiftpro did a great job fixing my heat pump to get my AC working again. They’re easy to work with and explained everything so that I was able to comprehend the issue well. They beat out other local competitors in price for the same service by 40%.

Questions
Yes, clear a few feet around the sides and the ground beneath, and brush loose snow off the top. Don’t chip at ice on the coil, since the fins bend easily. If it stays iced after that, book a heat pump visit.
The diagnostic is $99. A capacitor, the usual culprit on a hum with no start, is $240 to $370, and we price any repair in writing before we begin.
That’s defrost. The unit stops the outdoor fan, runs backwards for a few minutes to melt frost off the coil, and you see steam rising. It’s normal. Ice that stays is not.
The diagnostic visit is $99. From our price book, a capacitor is $240 to $370, a contactor $290 to $425, and a defrost board $450 to $1,150. You get the number before we start.
