What’s different in Lovettsville

Lovettsville has two ages of heat pump: the young ones, and the ones in the old village.

Lovettsville is a town of newer houses wrapped around an old village. The median owner home went up in 2007, and six in ten were built since 2000. Those pumps are mostly under twenty, and what fails on them is the stuff that has no business failing yet: a board, a sensor, a thermostat that stopped talking to the air handler. They are usually worth repairing.

Then there is the other group. About one home in five predates 1960, and those houses took a heat pump later, in a retrofit, with the old ducts still in place. In a retrofit the pump is often not the weak link. Small, leaky ducts and a closet air handler that was squeezed in can make a healthy heat pump feel weak. We look at airflow before we blame the outdoor unit, and we say so if the fix is the ducts.

Electricity and propane split the town almost evenly, so a heat pump here might be the entire system or the front half of a pair with a propane furnace. When it fails in the first case, the strips carry the house at a price you will see on the bill. In the second, the furnace covers and you may not notice until the tank runs low. Either way, the fan that has stopped turning is worth a call.

One house in nine is a townhouse. In places like Lakeview Village, the indoor half usually sits in a closet or attic and the outdoor unit on a pad out back, so a repair there is more about access than about the machine. Tell us where the air handler lives and we bring what we need. The same goes for the older village streets, where a unit may sit tight against a stone foundation, with little room to work.

By the numbers

Lovettsville houses, by the numbers

From the Census Bureau’s 2020 to 2024 survey. Median year built and heat count owner-occupied homes only.

  • Median home built2007 Census
  • Built before 1980about 3 in 10 Census
  • Built since 2000about 6 in 10 Census
  • Most homes aresingle-family houses, about 8 in 10 Census
  • Heated withelectricity, about 4 in 10 Census
  • Rentedabout 1 in 10 Census
  • A lot of homes here heat with electricity, most of them heat pumps, so a failing outdoor unit shows up on the power bill before it shows up as a cold house.
  • Many houses here were built since 2000 with a heat pump from the start. Plenty of those original units are now at the age where repairs come more often.

What you’d notice

What a heat pump in trouble in Lovettsville usually does.

The thermostat and the unit stopped talking

On the newer, communicating systems that make up much of Lovettsville, a blank thermostat, an error code or a unit that ignores the thermostat can be a bad wire or a board, not the compressor. Photograph the code and the label on the outdoor unit before you call.

Aux or emergency heat that never goes off

When the outdoor unit stops pulling its weight, the electric strips in the air handler carry the house. The house stays warm, and the bill tells you a few weeks later. A stuck contactor is a common reason, and one of the cheapest fixes on our list.

Upstairs cold, downstairs fine

In a newer two-story house on one heat pump, the top floor lagging a few degrees can be ducts or the thermostat’s settings, not a failing unit. We check the system first and tell you which it is.

Choosing who fixes it

How to pick a heat pump repair company in Lovettsville.

Questions worth asking anybody who comes out, us included.

  1. Will they check the ducts before blaming the outdoor unit?

In a retrofit house, a heat pump that can’t keep up is often a duct problem. A tech who only tests the outdoor unit can condemn a good one. Ask whether airflow gets measured, not just refrigerant.

  2. Is the company licensed in Virginia?

Anyone can check on the state’s license lookup. Ours is Virginia Class A contractor license, on every van.

  3. Do they price the repair before they start?

Every heat pump repair on our list has a range, and you hear where yours lands before a part goes in. If someone can’t give you a number until it’s done, keep looking.

  4. Will they tell you when it’s not worth fixing?

An older heat pump with a refrigerant leak is often a bad repair. A good tech says so, with the repair price and the replacement price side by side.

Swiftpro did a great job fixing my heat pump to get my AC working again. They’re easy to work with and explained everything so that I was able to comprehend the issue well. They beat out other local competitors in price for the same service by 40%.

Questions

Heat pump questions from Lovettsville.

My Lovettsville heat pump is under twenty. Should I just replace it?

Usually not. Most failures at that age are a board, a sensor or a motor, and a thermostat at $300 to $640 or a board at $550 to $1,180 is a lot less than a new system. We tell you if it is the exception.

Do you fix a heat pump in an old stone house?

Yes. The trouble there is often the ducts, which were added long after the house, and we check them first. If the unit is the problem, we price the repair from the book before starting. The diagnostic visit is $99.

Why does my heat pump in Lovettsville steam and go quiet in the cold?

That’s defrost. The unit stops the outdoor fan, runs backwards for a few minutes to melt frost off the coil, and you see steam rising. It’s normal. Ice that stays is not.

How much does heat pump repair cost in Lovettsville?

The diagnostic visit is $99. From our price book, a capacitor is $240 to $370, a contactor $290 to $425, and a defrost board $450 to $1,150. You get the number before we start.
