What’s different in Lovettsville

Lovettsville dryer vents end at a hood that freezes, drifts over and takes the wind.

Most of the town’s houses are young: about six in ten date from 2000 or later, the typical owner’s house from 2007. In a Town Center, Keena or Loudoun West house the washer and dryer often sit on the bedroom floor, which sends the dryer vent line on a long trip, sideways between the joists and then out a gable end or through the roofline. Every elbow on that route is a spot where lint stops and stacks up.

Winter is where this town is hard on a dryer vent. The Purcellville co-op, the nearest long-term weather station, logs a low of 32 degrees or colder on about 115 nights in an average year. Dryer exhaust is warm and wet, and when it meets a hood that cold, damp lint can cling to the flap and frost can hold it partly open or partly shut. A half-packed line moves air slower, which leaves more moisture at the end to freeze.

Snow is the other test. An observer about two miles east-northeast of town measured 30 inches in February 2010, and the January 2016 blizzard dropped 30 to 36 inches across western Loudoun. A hood mounted low on a wall vanishes under that. After a big snow, dig the hood out before the next load, and if it’s on the roof, leave the dryer off and call us rather than climbing. A propane dryer also sends its burner exhaust out that same line, one more reason never to run it blocked.

Old Town runs the other way. The National Register nomination for the historic district puts most of its buildings between 1880 and 1930, decades before clothes dryers were common, so the laundry landed wherever it fit later: a basement, a back addition, a closed-in porch. Those runs are short, and the usual culprit is right behind the dryer, a foil accordion hose pinched flat when the machine got pushed back.

What it costs

What dryer vent cleaning costs in Lovettsville.

The same prices as everywhere we work: $298 for dryer vent cleaning on its own, $199 when it’s added to an air duct cleaning, and included every year with Comfort+ membership at $199 a year.

The price covers the whole dryer vent line, from the back of the dryer to the hood outside, with camera photos of what we find, a dated invoice, and before and after photos of your line when we can get a clear shot. Anything past the cleaning, like a new hose or a guard on the hood, you get the price first.

When it’s due

When a dryer vent needs cleaning in Lovettsville.

A crust of frost and lint on the hood

A little frost on the flap is normal on a cold Lovettsville morning. A thick crust of frost and lint that keeps the flap from closing means damp air is lingering at the end, and that often points to a line that’s slow somewhere upstream.

The house is newer, the dryer vent isn’t clean

A 2005 house has run twenty years of laundry through its dryer vent, often a long run from an upstairs laundry room, and plenty have never been cleaned end to end.

Towels take two cycles

The first thing most people notice. When the dryer vent is packed, the damp air has nowhere to go, so the clothes stay wet and the dryer runs hot.

The dryer vent, locally

What the fire department says about dryer vents.

Loudoun County

Ashburn Volunteer Fire and Rescue, one of the companies in Loudoun County’s fire and rescue system, says the dryer vent, from the back of the dryer to the outside of the house, should be cleaned at least once a year, and that longer drying times are a sign it’s clogged. Source.

Choosing who cleans it

Questions to ask anybody who quotes you, us included.

  1. Do they ask how high up your dryer vent ends?

Here it could be a side wall at knee height, a gable end two stories up or a townhouse roof. Asking first means the right ladder comes along and the whole line gets cleaned in one trip.

  2. Do they clean the whole line, end to end?

Brushing the first few feet from the laundry room isn’t a dryer vent cleaning. Ask whether they clean from the back of the dryer to the hood outside, and how they get the lint out of the house instead of pushing it further down.

  3. Do they show you what’s inside the line?

Camera photos of the inside of your dryer vent line are how you know it needed cleaning, and before and after photos are how you know the job was done. Ask to see them, and for a dated invoice if your HOA wants proof.

Questions

Dryer vent cleaning questions from Lovettsville.

Can wind damage a dryer vent hood in Lovettsville?

It can. A weather station in town measured a 63 mph gust on February 16, 2025, and the 2012 derecho brought a 60 mph gust two miles northeast. A hood that was already loose or cracked doesn’t hold up to that, and a flap stuck open lets cold air and rain in. Every dryer vent cleaning includes a look at the hood from outdoors; if it’s broken, you hear the replacement price before we touch it.

How much does dryer vent cleaning cost in Lovettsville?

$298 booked on its own, $199 added to an air duct cleaning, and included every year with Comfort+ membership at $199 a year.
