What’s different in Upperville

Upperville’s houses are old, and the heat pumps in them were retrofitted.

The Census sample for Upperville is small, only 67 owner homes, so we read it as a lean and not a count. The lean is two ways: about two houses in three on electric heat, the rest on propane, and none on natural gas. More striking is the age. The median owner home dates to 1966 and seven in ten were built before 1960, making this the oldest housing of any town we cover out west.

A house built before 1960 didn’t start with a heat pump. The pump was added later, often in the 1990s or 2000s, and the ducts are whatever the house already had. That makes airflow the first question on a weak pump. A strong outdoor unit pushing through small ducts will freeze its own coil, and the symptom looks like low refrigerant. We measure before we guess, and we say so if the fix isn’t in the unit.

The pump that was added in the 1990s is now at the age where we see worn contactors, capacitors and fan motors, and if it went in before 2010 it may be on R-22. The EPA ended new production in 2020, so a leak on one is a matter of how much refrigerant is still out there and what it costs. For a house this old, a pump is a long-term part of the property, and we try to help you keep it running when the repair is sensible.

Many of the homes here are rentals, and many are on large lots with a long drive. If you are a tenant, the repair is usually your landlord’s call, but we can diagnose and write up what’s wrong so the owner has numbers. Upperville spans two counties, Fauquier and Loudoun, and we work in both. Tell us the address and we will know which side you are on.

What you’d notice

What a heat pump in trouble in Upperville usually does.

The ducts are older than the pump

A heat pump in a house from the 1950s may be pushing air through ducts built for a different system. If some rooms stay cold while the unit runs fine, or the coil ices up and the airflow feels weak, the ducts and the filter are the first things we check, before any parts.

The outdoor unit is a block of ice

A little frost on a cold morning is normal, and the unit melts it off every so often by running backwards for a few minutes. Ice that builds for hours and covers the whole coil usually means the defrost board, a sensor, or low refrigerant.

Cool air from the vents

Cool air for a few minutes on a frosty morning is the unit defrosting. Cool air for an hour is not. Check that the thermostat is on heat, not cool or auto, then call.

Choosing who fixes it

How to pick a heat pump repair company in Upperville.

Questions worth asking anybody who comes out, us included.

  1. Will they measure the airflow before blaming the unit?

In an old house a heat pump can be fine and the ducts too small. A tech who reads the airflow before condemning the outdoor unit saves you a repair you didn’t need.

  2. Is the company licensed in Virginia?

Anyone can check on the state’s license lookup. Ours is Virginia Class A contractor license, on every van.

  3. Do they price the repair before they start?

Every heat pump repair on our list has a range, and you hear where yours lands before a part goes in. If someone can’t give you a number until it’s done, keep looking.

  4. Will they tell you when it’s not worth fixing?

An older heat pump with a refrigerant leak is often a bad repair. A good tech says so, with the repair price and the replacement price side by side.

Swiftpro did a great job fixing my heat pump to get my AC working again. They’re easy to work with and explained everything so that I was able to comprehend the issue well. They beat out other local competitors in price for the same service by 40%.

Questions

Heat pump questions from Upperville.

I rent a house in Upperville and the heat pump quit. Who calls?

Start with your landlord, who usually owns the repair. We can still come out, diagnose it, and put the cause and the price on paper for them. The diagnostic visit is $99.

The label on my old heat pump says R-22. Is it dead?

No, it can run for years. But a leak on it means buying scarce refrigerant, and that is where we price a replacement next to the repair. A capacitor or a contactor on the same unit is still a small fix.

Why does my heat pump in Upperville steam and go quiet in the cold?

That’s defrost. The unit stops the outdoor fan, runs backwards for a few minutes to melt frost off the coil, and you see steam rising. It’s normal. Ice that stays is not.

How much does heat pump repair cost in Upperville?

The diagnostic visit is $99. From our price book, a capacitor is $240 to $370, a contactor $290 to $425, and a defrost board $450 to $1,150. You get the number before we start.
