What’s different in Upperville

Upperville isn’t in a utility service district, so a camera has a narrow job.

Fauquier County’s plan sends public utilities only to designated service districts, and Upperville isn’t one. The state laid the village out in 1797 along the Alexandria-Winchester Turnpike, and its 2021 historic district survey counts 136 principal buildings, 40 of them up before 1861. Houses that old predate indoor plumbing, so whatever drain serves one today was run in later. For most of them, the pipe leaving the foundation more likely heads for a tank in the yard than for a main under the road.

A camera has little to offer a line like that, and we’d rather say so. SwiftPro does no septic work: we don’t scope the pipe to a tank, test a drainfield or judge a tank’s condition. What the camera does well is a line that joins a public main, where it shows the pipe’s condition and how far from the house a defect sits. If you aren’t sure which kind you have, that question comes before any booking.

The Census survey of ZIP 20184 is rough at this size, but it puts the median owner home at 1966, with about seven in ten built before 1960. The postwar houses along Parker and Patrick Streets and the older stone, brick and frame houses on the turnpike carry different pipe. A house from the 1950s or 1960s may have fiber or clay outside the wall and cast iron inside it, and an older one can carry all three. A camera on a main reads each stretch where it changes.

The village is shaded end to end by old trees, the state’s register says, and the storm records show what that costs. NOAA lists hundreds of trees, branches and wires down between Middleburg and Upperville on June 22, 2022, and dozens more around the village on August 7, 2023. Roots and drain lines meet underground. The County’s village plan also warns that soils in the drainageways feeding Panther Skin Creek flood or carry a high seasonal water table.

What it costs

What a sewer camera inspection costs in Upperville.

Why we’re at the house decides which price you pay. On its own, the line often has to be cleared before the camera can see anything, and that’s what moves the number.

  • Sewer camera inspection, added to a visit$89
  • Sewer camera inspection on its own$500 to $1,700

A locator on the camera head marks the spot and its depth on the ground, so if something needs fixing you know where. If the line is fine, nobody talks about digging.

Comfort+ membership is $199 a year for four visits: a dryer vent cleaning, a water heater flush with a sewer camera inspection, a heating maintenance visit and a cooling maintenance visit.

When it’s worth a look

When to put a camera down the line in Upperville.

A soggy strip between the house and the road

Near the drainageways that feed Panther Skin Creek, a wet patch can be the water table and not a leak. If a tank sits under that spot, call a septic contractor first. If the strip runs along a line from the house to a main, a camera can tell you which it is.

Water comes up the floor drain

When the washer empties and water rises in the basement floor drain, or a toilet gurgles while a sink runs, the main line isn’t carrying it all away. The camera shows why.

It was cleared, and it’s back

A main line that needs clearing every year or two has a reason, and clearing it again doesn’t find it. A camera down the line after it’s cleared does.

Who owns the line

Whose sewer line it is in Upperville.

Fauquier County

On FCWSA sewer, the service line from the main to the property line and the lateral from there to the house are the customer’s to clear. FCWSA clears its mains and fixes a service line under a public street, and it doesn’t reimburse a plumber. Source.

Loudoun County

In Loudoun the homeowner maintains the building sewer, Loudoun Water alone repairs the part under the street, and a Loudoun Water inspector checks any replacement before it’s backfilled. Source.

Choosing who runs the camera

How to pick the best plumber for a sewer camera inspection in Upperville.

Questions to ask anybody who offers to put a camera down your line, us included.

  1. Will they say what they won’t do before they book?

In a village without public utilities, a plumber who takes a camera job should ask about a tank first. Expect a straight answer about septic work, have the scope of the visit in writing, and ask them to mark how far down the line any defect sits.

  2. Will they show you what the camera finds?

Ask to see it and to keep a copy. “It’s roots” with nothing to show for it is a guess, and a guess is a bad reason to dig up a yard.

  3. Do they line and dig, or only one?

A company that only digs tends to see a dig, and one that only lines tends to see a liner. We do both, so the footage decides, not the truck.

What our customers say.

★★★★★
Nii is the best. He’s been to the house twice – once for a galvanized to PVC piping change-out, and another time for a badly clogged kitchen line that wouldn’t budge with my snake and a good bit of effort. Super nice guy, very skilled, fair, calm, etc. Exactly what you want in a plumber.

Questions

Sewer camera questions from Upperville.

Does the Loudoun side of 20184 work differently?

Only if your house is tied to Loudoun Water’s sewer. Under its rules the pipe from your foundation out to the street is yours to keep up. The utility steps in for the stretch beneath the pavement, and it sends an inspector to look at a new pipe before anyone backfills. Footage with a distance from the house shows which part a defect is in. On a tank, either county, the septic answer above applies.

I rent in Upperville. Can I book a camera visit?

By the Census Bureau’s rough survey, about seven in ten occupied homes in 20184 are rented, so it comes up. Anyone can book, but the pipe belongs to the owner, so the footage and any repair price should go to them. If the house is on a tank, the owner’s next call is a septic contractor.

How much does a sewer camera inspection cost in Upperville?

$89 added to a visit we’re already making, $500 to $1,700 booked on its own. The difference is clearing: a visit just for the camera often has to clear the line first.

Should I get a sewer camera inspection before I buy a house?

If the house is older or has big trees out front, yes. A standard home inspection usually doesn’t include one, and in most of Northern Virginia the line from the house toward the street is the owner’s to fix.
