What’s different in Centreville

Centreville sewer lines: 1990 plastic under grown trees, and septic on the edges.

The median owner home in Centreville went up in 1990, and about seven in ten were built between 1980 and 1999. By then the line to the street was usually PVC with glued joints, which won’t rust through like cast iron or crack like clay. What it can do is sink. The trench was backfilled when the subdivision went in, and thirty years of settling can leave a low spot where water sits and paper catches.

The other half is trees. The ones planted along the courts and front walks when those subdivisions went in are full grown now, and Fairfax County’s wastewater office says roots work their way into open joints and cracks. A plastic joint that pulled apart as the trench settled is exactly that kind of opening, and once roots are in, the line slows a little more each year.

Only about one owner home in nine here predates 1980. In those few the pipe may be cast iron or clay, and on some built from the late 1940s to the early 1970s, Orangeburg: pressed tar paper that goes oval, then caves in. If nobody knows what’s under the yard, the camera goes in before any snake does.

Not every Centreville address drains to a county main. The county health department lists about 390 properties in 20120 and 20121 with an active septic record, many of them along Bull Run Post Office Road, Compton Road and Fairfax National Way. On one of those, the line from the house ends at a tank, and septic work is not something SwiftPro does.

What it costs

What a sewer camera inspection costs in Centreville.

Why we’re at the house decides which price you pay. On its own, the line often has to be cleared before the camera can see anything, and that’s what moves the number.

  • Sewer camera inspection, added to a visit$89
  • Sewer camera inspection on its own$500 to $1,700

A locator on the camera head marks the spot and its depth on the ground, so if something needs fixing you know where. If the line is fine, nobody talks about digging.

Comfort+ membership is $199 a year for four visits: a dryer vent cleaning, a water heater flush with a sewer camera inspection, a heating maintenance visit and a cooling maintenance visit.

When it’s worth a look

When to put a camera down the line in Centreville.

The basement drain backs up when nothing is running

Fairfax County says sewage coming up while no water is running may mean trouble in its own main, and to call its 24-hour wastewater line before a plumber. If it backs up only when the washer drains or someone showers, the blockage is more likely in your lateral, the line the camera is for.

Water comes up the floor drain

When the washer empties and water rises in the basement floor drain, or a toilet gurgles while a sink runs, the main line isn’t carrying it all away. The camera shows why.

It was cleared, and it’s back

A main line that needs clearing every year or two has a reason, and clearing it again doesn’t find it. A camera down the line after it’s cleared does.

Choosing who runs the camera

How to pick the best plumber for a sewer camera inspection in Centreville.

Questions to ask anybody who offers to put a camera down your line, us included.

  1. Will they tell you to call the county after cutting roots?

Fairfax County asks that whenever a plumber clears roots from a lateral, someone calls its 24-hour line so the county can clean its main too. A plumber who mentions it is looking past the end of your yard.

  2. Will they show you what the camera finds?

Ask to see it and to keep a copy. “It’s roots” with nothing to show for it is a guess, and a guess is a bad reason to dig up a yard.

  3. Do they line and dig, or only one?

A company that only digs tends to see a dig, and one that only lines tends to see a liner. We do both, so the footage decides, not the truck.

What our customers say.

★★★★★
Nii is the best. He’s been to the house twice – once for a galvanized to PVC piping change-out, and another time for a badly clogged kitchen line that wouldn’t budge with my snake and a good bit of effort. Super nice guy, very skilled, fair, calm, etc. Exactly what you want in a plumber.

Questions

Sewer camera questions from Centreville.

Who pays to fix a broken sewer line under a Centreville street?

The homeowner. Fairfax County treats the lateral as private for its whole length, the connection to the main and the stretch beneath the road included. Fixing it takes a county plumbing permit, plus a VDOT permit if the break is under a state maintained road. So the footage and the locator’s mark come before any talk of digging.

My Centreville townhouse has a basement bathroom. Should I get sewer backup coverage?

Fairfax County suggests owners with fixtures below grade look into it, and notes that standard homeowners insurance doesn’t cover repairs to the lateral itself. Ask about water backup coverage for damage inside and service line coverage for the pipe. A camera inspection shows what shape that pipe is in first.

How much does a sewer camera inspection cost in Centreville?

$89 added to a visit we’re already making, $500 to $1,700 booked on its own. The difference is clearing: a visit just for the camera often has to clear the line first.

Should I get a sewer camera inspection before I buy a house?

If the house is older or has big trees out front, yes. A standard home inspection usually doesn’t include one, and in most of Northern Virginia the line from the house toward the street is the owner’s to fix.
