What’s different in Marshall

Prewar village lines, 1980s cul-de-sacs, and rock under some Marshall yards.

The County’s plan for Marshall counts more than 60 buildings from between the World Wars, and the Census puts about one home in seven in 20115 before 1940. Those houses are older than the Fauquier County Water and Sanitation Authority, first chartered in 1964, which runs the village sewer now. A drain that old has often been cut into more than once, so two or three kinds of pipe can meet between the basement wall and the main.

About 420 homes in the ZIP date from the 1940s through the 1960s, when some builders laid Orangeburg, a coal tar fiber pipe that loses its round shape with age and can come apart under a cable. With nothing on record about the line, a Marshall house from those years gets the camera before the cable.

North of Main Street, west of Rectortown Road, the County’s plan puts a neighborhood of cul-de-sacs built mostly in the 1970s to 1990s. The 1980s were the ZIP’s busiest decade, about 600 homes, and the median owner home dates from 1986. A line from the 1980s on is likely PVC, so the camera checks grade and joints: a run that sank in its trench and holds water, or a joint knocked out of line.

The ground is another reason to look before anyone digs. The County maps soils in parts of the service district with bedrock 20 to 40 inches down, where laying utilities takes ripping or blasting, and soils that shrink and swell. Moving ground works on pipe joints, and over rock, a hole in the wrong place is an expensive guess. We show you what the camera finds, and where, before anything gets priced.

Marshall

ZIP 20115 as a whole: every Marshall address, the village included. The Census place for the village alone has too few homes for steady figures.

  • Median home built1986 Census
  • Built before 1980about 4 in 10 Census
  • Built since 2000about 2 in 10 Census
  • Most homes aresingle-family houses, about 8 in 10 Census

  • Lines from before 1960 are often clay or cast iron, and roots get in at the joints.
What it costs

What a sewer camera inspection costs in Marshall.

Why we’re at the house decides which price you pay. On its own, the line often has to be cleared before the camera can see anything, and that’s what moves the number.

  • Sewer camera inspection, added to a visit$89
  • Sewer camera inspection on its own$500 to $1,700

A locator on the camera head marks the spot and its depth on the ground, so if something needs fixing you know where. If the line is fine, nobody talks about digging.

Comfort+ membership is $199 a year for four visits: a dryer vent cleaning, a water heater flush with a sewer camera inspection, a heating maintenance visit and a cooling maintenance visit.

When it’s worth a look

When to put a camera down the line in Marshall.

The drains slow down after a wet week

If the house drains fine in a dry spell and sluggishly after days of rain, water may be leaking in through a cracked joint or an open cleanout. Parts of Marshall have a seasonal water table 10 to 40 inches down, so a damaged line there can sit in groundwater.

Big trees in the front yard

Roots don’t break a sewer line. They find a crack or a loose joint that’s already there and grow into it, which is why a line under old trees is worth a look before it slows down.

Water comes up the floor drain

When the washer empties and water rises in the basement floor drain, or a toilet gurgles while a sink runs, the main line isn’t carrying it all away. The camera shows why.

Who owns the line

Whose sewer line it is in Marshall.

Fauquier County

On FCWSA sewer, the service line from the main to the property line and the lateral from there to the house are the customer’s to clear. FCWSA clears its mains and fixes a service line under a public street, and it doesn’t reimburse a plumber. Source.

Choosing who runs the camera

How to pick the best plumber for a sewer camera inspection in Marshall.

Questions to ask anybody who offers to put a camera down your line, us included.

  1. Did they ask whether the house is on sewer or septic?

Past the Marshall service district a house drains to its own septic tank, not to an FCWSA main, so anybody booking a camera here should ask. Ours goes down lines that run to FCWSA’s sewer; SwiftPro does no septic work.

  2. Will they show you what the camera finds?

Ask to see it and to keep a copy. “It’s roots” with nothing to show for it is a guess, and a guess is a bad reason to dig up a yard.

  3. Do they line and dig, or only one?

A company that only digs tends to see a dig, and one that only lines tends to see a liner. We do both, so the footage decides, not the truck.

What our customers say.

★★★★★
We had Tyson out for our main line leaking underground, he explained the scope of work for replacement and set great expectations. They had the job done in a very timely manner and I couldn’t ask for more professionalism than he provided!

Questions

Sewer camera questions from Marshall.

Sewage is backing up in my Marshall house. Who do I call first?

FCWSA, at (540) 349-2092. Its crew checks the main and clears any stoppage there, whatever the cause. If the main checks out, the clog is on your side of it, and that’s when to book the camera, so you see where it’s stuck before anyone talks about digging.

Can the camera tell me whether the line can be fixed without digging?

Often. A run that’s cracked but still round and open may be a candidate for lining, which matters most where rock sits close under the lawn. Lining is quoted off the footage; our trenchless sewer repair page shows how it works.

How much does a sewer camera inspection cost in Marshall?

$89 added to a visit we’re already making, $500 to $1,700 booked on its own. The difference is clearing: a visit just for the camera often has to clear the line first.

Should I get a sewer camera inspection before I buy a house?

If the house is older or has big trees out front, yes. A standard home inspection usually doesn’t include one, and in most of Northern Virginia the line from the house toward the street is the owner’s to fix.
