Brown first, then gritty
Brown water in the first seconds of a shower, or grit on the showerhead screen, points at the water and not the valve. If the cartridge drips as well, the grit has probably scratched its seat. We can fix both in one visit.

What’s different in Marshall
A loose Marshall shower handle starts with the screw behind its cap. Tighten it and test the handle with the water running. If it still slips, the teeth on the stem are worn, and a new handle or cartridge is the next step.
Inside the Marshall Service District, water comes from FCWSA’s own wells, 285 to 445 feet deep in fractured rock. FCWSA says two of those wells carry very high iron and manganese, and a greensand filter handles it at the 17/66 wells. Iron that slips past a filter settles as fine grit, and grit lodges where a cartridge seals.
Outside the Service District, homes run on private wells. FCWSA also notes that a well running long hours in summer can give harder, discolored water that it doesn’t give in winter. So a shower that’s fine in March and gritty in August isn’t odd, and it’s not always the valve’s fault.
ZIP 20115 splits three ways: 22 percent built before 1960, 44 percent before 1980, and 36 percent from 1980 to 1999. The village, laid out in 1796 where Routes 17 and 55 cross, has the older two-handle showers. The 1980s and 90s subdivisions have first-generation single-handle valves that are now due.
By the numbers
From the Census Bureau’s 2020 to 2024 survey. Median year built and heat count owner-occupied homes only.
ZIP 20115 as a whole: every Marshall address, the village included. The Census place for the village alone has too few homes for steady figures.
The signs
Brown water in the first seconds of a shower, or grit on the showerhead screen, points at the water and not the valve. If the cartridge drips as well, the grit has probably scratched its seat. We can fix both in one visit.
Usually a set screw under the cap that backed out, or worn teeth where the handle grips the cartridge. Tightening the screw only lasts if the teeth are still good.
On a single-handle shower that’s the cartridge. On an older two-handle or three-handle shower, it’s the washers or the stems. Either one comes out the front, and the wall stays closed.

Choosing who does it
Questions to ask anybody who pulls your shower handle off, us included.
Rust-colored crust on the old part means the new one will foul the same way unless something changes. Ask what they’d do about that, whether it’s a filter or just a flush.
Most loose handles and drips are a cartridge or a screw. A plumber who prices a new valve without looking inside first may be selling you a wall you didn’t need opened.
A shower that runs fine on its own can still jump hot when someone flushes. Ask them to run it both ways before they pack up.

Alex arrived on time and after some time he explained the situation regarding the low flow faucet and fixed the problem. Very professional. I would call on him and the company again for my plumbing repairs.

Questions
Inside the Service District it’s FCWSA’s system, and outside it’s a private well. A pressure tank in the basement or a capped well in the yard means a well. Either way the valve repair is the same, at around $250 to $450.
Not necessarily. FCWSA says wells running long summer hours can produce water that’s worse than in winter. Check the showerhead for crust first. If the handle also drips, the cartridge is the culprit.
Most shower valve repairs we do run $250 to $450, with the visit at $49, $250 after hours. A whole new valve with trim runs $950 to $1,400, and a tub spout runs $200 to $400.
Not for a cartridge, a handle or a diverter. Those come out the front. A valve replacement goes in from an access panel when there is one, and when there isn’t, a larger trim plate can usually cover the opening so the tile stays.
