The handle turns, but nothing changes
If the handle spins and the water stays as it was, the stem is stripped or the handle is slipping on it. The valve body behind the wall is probably fine. The fix is usually a part.

What’s different in Rectortown
Old houses hide small problems. A handle that has gone loose often just needs its screw, which is easy to miss under a cap or button. If it’s snug and the handle still slips, the stem inside has worn smooth, and that’s a part, not a new wall.
The House of Burgesses set up Rectortown in 1772. Its Historic District has 54 properties: six from the last half of the 1700s, eight from the first half of the 1800s, and 25 from 1880 to 1910. A shower in one of those came decades after the house, often squeezed into a back room or under a stair.
The nomination describes frame I-houses and plain local dwellings on stone foundations. A house on a stone foundation often has a crawl space instead of a basement, and from there a shower valve is sometimes reachable from below. That would spare the finished bathroom. We look first, then tell you.
No water system reaches the village. FCWSA’s 2025 report lists sixteen and none is in Rectortown. USGS notes that groundwater typically recharges in winter and spring, then falls through summer and fall, so a shower that spits in late summer may be a tired well, not a tired cartridge.
By the numbers
From the Census Bureau’s 2020 to 2024 survey. Median year built and heat count owner-occupied homes only.
Rectortown’s own ZIP, 20140, is post office boxes only, so the Census Bureau maps no area for it. These are ZIP 20115 as a whole, the Marshall ZIP area that holds nearly nine in ten of the Rectortown Census place’s homes, Marshall included.
The signs
If the handle spins and the water stays as it was, the stem is stripped or the handle is slipping on it. The valve body behind the wall is probably fine. The fix is usually a part.
Usually a set screw under the cap that backed out, or worn teeth where the handle grips the cartridge. Tightening the screw only lasts if the teeth are still good.
On a single-handle shower that’s the cartridge. On an older two-handle or three-handle shower, it’s the washers or the stems. Either one comes out the front, and the wall stays closed.

Choosing who does it
Questions to ask anybody who pulls your shower handle off, us included.
Lath, plaster and stone foundations don’t forgive a rough hand. Ask how they plan to reach the valve, and who fixes the wall if it has to be cut.
Most loose handles and drips are a cartridge or a screw. A plumber who prices a new valve without looking inside first may be selling you a wall you didn’t need opened.
A shower that runs fine on its own can still jump hot when someone flushes. Ask them to run it both ways before they pack up.

Questions
Without the shower, yes, for the repair itself, and the sinks come back on first. A cartridge swap is a short job when the valve is within reach. Very old stems take longer. We tell you which one yours is before we start.
Rubber washers and seals harden with age, and cold makes it worse. A drip that appears in winter is often a seal that was already tired. New washers or a cartridge, at around $250 to $450, usually ends it.
Most shower valve repairs we do run $250 to $450, with the visit at $49, $250 after hours. A whole new valve with trim runs $950 to $1,400, and a tub spout runs $200 to $400.
Not for a cartridge, a handle or a diverter. Those come out the front. A valve replacement goes in from an access panel when there is one, and when there isn’t, a larger trim plate can usually cover the opening so the tile stays.
