The handle won’t turn at all

What’s different in Falls Church
First, grab the wall plate behind the handle. If the whole plate shifts, it’s the trim screws, not the valve. If only the lever moves and the water doesn’t respond, the grip on the cartridge stem has worn, and tightening won’t hold for long.
Inside the City, a third of homes were built before 1960 and the median owner home is from 1964. Capes, bungalows and brick colonials of that age often still have a tub with two handles and washers, and a hall bath nobody has touched since the house went up. On the county side, around Idylwood, Lake Barcroft and Pimmit Hills, the median is 1975, so more of those showers have a single-handle valve of the first generation, with parts that can be hard to find.
Most of Falls Church gets Washington Aqueduct water through Fairfax Water, which ran 5.6 to 10.9 grains per gallon in 2025. Scale shows up at the showerhead first and then in the cartridge. If a vinegar soak brings the spray back but the handle still drips, the head wasn’t the problem.
Almost half the City’s homes are in apartment and condo buildings. If yours is one, a cartridge swap starts with management and the building’s shutoff, and tightening a handle doesn’t need either. Have your condo rules handy when you call, since some buildings limit work hours.

The signs
A frozen handle is a cartridge locked by scale or corrosion. Forcing it can snap the stem, and then the valve has to be opened up. Stop pushing and call before it breaks.
Usually a set screw under the cap that backed out, or worn teeth where the handle grips the cartridge. Tightening the screw only lasts if the teeth are still good.
On a single-handle shower that’s the cartridge. On an older two-handle or three-handle shower, it’s the washers or the stems. Either one comes out the front, and the wall stays closed.
Choosing who does it
Questions to ask anybody who pulls your shower handle off, us included.
Scale on a head is a ten-minute fix. A plumber who goes straight to the valve for weak flow may be solving the wrong problem, so ask what they test first.
Most loose handles and drips are a cartridge or a screw. A plumber who prices a new valve without looking inside first may be selling you a wall you didn’t need opened.
A shower that runs fine on its own can still jump hot when someone flushes. Ask them to run it both ways before they pack up.

Alex arrived on time and after some time he explained the situation regarding the low flow faucet and fixed the problem. Very professional. I would call on him and the company again for my plumbing repairs.

Questions
Most of the City gets Washington Aqueduct water through Fairfax Water, and some county-side addresses get Fairfax Water’s own. Both run moderately hard to hard, so scale on heads and cartridges is normal either way.
Almost always it’s scale in the head, not the valve. Soak the head in vinegar. If flow is still weak with the head off, the cartridge is partly blocked, and that’s a repair at $250 to $450.
Most shower valve repairs we do run $250 to $450, with the visit at $49, $250 after hours. A whole new valve with trim runs $950 to $1,400, and a tub spout runs $200 to $400.
Not for a cartridge, a handle or a diverter. Those come out the front. A valve replacement goes in from an access panel when there is one, and when there isn’t, a larger trim plate can usually cover the opening so the tile stays.
