Is it the well or the valve?
Run the kitchen sink beside the shower. If both sputter or swing together, the trouble sits upstream of the shower. If only the shower misbehaves, it’s the valve, and a cartridge is the likely fix.

What’s different in Philomont
A loose handle usually has a small screw behind a cap or plug. Snug it first. If the handle still turns on its own, the teeth that grip the cartridge have worn, and a new handle or cartridge is the fix. On a common brand, that’s a short visit.
Nobody here is on a town main. Loudoun County’s well records show close to 1,300 active household wells within three miles of Philomont, so the water in your shower came up through a pump and sat in a tank first. That tank is the first suspect when a shower won’t hold steady.
When the shower pulses, or drifts from hot to lukewarm in a rhythm, look at the pump before the valve. A tank that has lost its air makes the pump start and stop every few seconds, and you feel each one at the showerhead. Amtrol, which makes well tanks, says a bigger tank means the pump runs less and lasts longer.
Philomont sits in ZIP 20132, where nearly half the homes went up in 2000 or later and about a quarter before 1980. The newer ones have single-handle pressure-balancing valves, where a drip is the cartridge. The older farmhouses on the back roads are more likely to still have two handles with stems and washers.
By the numbers
From the Census Bureau’s 2020 to 2024 survey. Median year built and heat count owner-occupied homes only.
Philomont’s own ZIP, 20131, is post office boxes only, so the Census Bureau maps no area for it. These are ZIP 20132 as a whole, the Purcellville ZIP area Philomont sits in, the Town of Purcellville included.
The signs
Run the kitchen sink beside the shower. If both sputter or swing together, the trouble sits upstream of the shower. If only the shower misbehaves, it’s the valve, and a cartridge is the likely fix.
Usually a set screw under the cap that backed out, or worn teeth where the handle grips the cartridge. Tightening the screw only lasts if the teeth are still good.
On a single-handle shower that’s the cartridge. On an older two-handle or three-handle shower, it’s the washers or the stems. Either one comes out the front, and the wall stays closed.

Choosing who does it
Questions to ask anybody who pulls your shower handle off, us included.
A plumber who swaps a cartridge for a surge may be treating the wrong thing. Ask them to test a second fixture before they take the handle off.
Most loose handles and drips are a cartridge or a screw. A plumber who prices a new valve without looking inside first may be selling you a wall you didn’t need opened.
A shower that runs fine on its own can still jump hot when someone flushes. Ask them to run it both ways before they pack up.

Alex arrived on time and after some time he explained the situation regarding the low flow faucet and fixed the problem. Very professional. I would call on him and the company again for my plumbing repairs.

Questions
Pressure swings as the tank fills and drains. A pressure-balancing valve smooths some of it, and a worn one stops. If the swing hits every tap, it’s the tank or the pressure switch. If only the shower, it’s the cartridge, around $250 to $450.
Not the numbers. The visit is $49, or $250 after hours, and the repair is priced from the list on our shower page. The well changes what we check: grit in the old cartridge, and a quick look at the pressure gauge.
Most shower valve repairs we do run $250 to $450, with the visit at $49, $250 after hours. A whole new valve with trim runs $950 to $1,400, and a tub spout runs $200 to $400.
Not for a cartridge, a handle or a diverter. Those come out the front. A valve replacement goes in from an access panel when there is one, and when there isn’t, a larger trim plate can usually cover the opening so the tile stays.
