A shower that sprays hard or whines
Too much pressure makes a shower noisy and shortens the life of whatever sits in the valve. The valve alone won’t cure it. A regulator on the line, and a gauge to prove it, will.

What’s different in The Plains
If your shower handle slips in your hand, give the screw behind the cap a turn. When it bites and the handle still goes round without moving the water, the grip is stripped inside, and the new part is a handle or a cartridge. It rarely means the valve body has to come out.
The Plains has its own public water system: two wells, 415 and 610 feet deep, pumping into an above-ground tank set higher in the system. That tank’s height is what pushes water to your tap. FCWSA’s 2025 report prints no hardness figure for it, so we won’t quote one.
A house low in the system sees more pressure than one near the tank, and high pressure wears washers and cartridges faster. FCWSA says that above 80 psi the customer should put in a pressure regulating device, and that it can’t promise even pressure. A whining shower or a drip that returns after a new cartridge is a reason to put a gauge on the line.
Three in ten homes in ZIP 20198 went up before 1960 and about a quarter since 2000, so a street here can have a two-handle shower next door to a pressure-balancing one. The old ones drip at the stems and washers. The newer ones are a cartridge, and a gauge reading is the first thing to check on either.
By the numbers

The signs
Too much pressure makes a shower noisy and shortens the life of whatever sits in the valve. The valve alone won’t cure it. A regulator on the line, and a gauge to prove it, will.
Usually a set screw under the cap that backed out, or worn teeth where the handle grips the cartridge. Tightening the screw only lasts if the teeth are still good.
On a single-handle shower that’s the cartridge. On an older two-handle or three-handle shower, it’s the washers or the stems. Either one comes out the front, and the wall stays closed.

Choosing who does it
Questions to ask anybody who pulls your shower handle off, us included.
A pressure gauge on a hose bib takes a minute. If a plumber swaps the cartridge twice and never reads the gauge, ask why.
Most loose handles and drips are a cartridge or a screw. A plumber who prices a new valve without looking inside first may be selling you a wall you didn’t need opened.
A shower that runs fine on its own can still jump hot when someone flushes. Ask them to run it both ways before they pack up.

Questions
The District takes in every property in town, and its Architectural Review Board approves improvements. A cartridge swap inside a bathroom is a repair, not an improvement, but if you’re also changing anything outside, check with the Town first.
It can be a clogged showerhead, a stop that isn’t fully open, or a worn cartridge. A showerhead is a two-minute check. If a new one doesn’t help, we pull the handle, show you the part, and price it at around $250 to $450.
Most shower valve repairs we do run $250 to $450, with the visit at $49, $250 after hours. A whole new valve with trim runs $950 to $1,400, and a tub spout runs $200 to $400.
Not for a cartridge, a handle or a diverter. Those come out the front. A valve replacement goes in from an access panel when there is one, and when there isn’t, a larger trim plate can usually cover the opening so the tile stays.
