Grit in the cartridge
Grit makes a shower handle feel sandy to turn, then makes it drip. It is a part wearing out early because of what the water carries, and a new cartridge buys back time.

What’s different in Paeonian Springs
A loose handle here starts the same way it does anywhere. A small screw under the cap or at the base of the handle works loose, and tightening it often settles things. If the handle spins loosely anyway, the teeth inside it or on the stem are worn, and that wear tends to show up sooner where the water carries grit.
There is no public water system in Paeonian Springs, so each house draws from its own well, and some share one with a neighbor. The county’s 2019 study found the median well in the community was 37 years old, and that some wells had past sediment problems. Sediment is what jams a shower cartridge. It rides in with the water, lodges in the ports, and the handle gets stiff or the shower starts dripping because a seal no longer sits flat.
The same study reported wells that tested low in pH, which is acidic water that corrodes copper pipe. Water like that is hard on brass and chrome too. If the finish on your trim is pitting, or the shower arm has a green crust at the joint, the valve inside has seen the same water. We pull the cartridge and show you its condition, because a pitted one tells us more than a drip does.
A house on a well with a pressure tank has another trick: when the pump kicks in, a shower can surge hot and cold. That is the tank and the pressure switch, not the cartridge. If you notice it surges at the same moment the pump starts, tell us before we start taking the shower apart.
The signs
Grit makes a shower handle feel sandy to turn, then makes it drip. It is a part wearing out early because of what the water carries, and a new cartridge buys back time.
Usually a set screw under the cap that backed out, or worn teeth where the handle grips the cartridge. Tightening the screw only lasts if the teeth are still good.
On a single-handle shower that’s the cartridge. On an older two-handle or three-handle shower, it’s the washers or the stems. Either one comes out the front, and the wall stays closed.

Choosing who does it
Questions to ask anybody who pulls your shower handle off, us included.
They should. A well changes the diagnosis, since sediment and low pH wear out parts sooner. A plumber who doesn’t ask is guessing.
Most loose handles and drips are a cartridge or a screw. A plumber who prices a new valve without looking inside first may be selling you a wall you didn’t need opened.
A shower that runs fine on its own can still jump hot when someone flushes. Ask them to run it both ways before they pack up.

Questions
Often, yes. Acidic well water is hard on plating. A new handle or trim plate fixes the look, and a cartridge swap in the $250 to $450 range fixes any drip that came with it.
Not usually. Look at the pressure tank first. A valve with pressure balancing smooths some of it, and a whole new valve with trim is $950 to $1,400. We check the tank before we suggest it.
Most shower valve repairs we do run $250 to $450, with the visit at $49, $250 after hours. A whole new valve with trim runs $950 to $1,400, and a tub spout runs $200 to $400.
Not for a cartridge, a handle or a diverter. Those come out the front. A valve replacement goes in from an access panel when there is one, and when there isn’t, a larger trim plate can usually cover the opening so the tile stays.
