The drip is at the spout, not the handle
If water runs from the tub spout while the shower head is on, the diverter is worn. On a pull-up spout, a new spout is $200 to $400. On a diverter inside the valve, it’s a cartridge.

What’s different in Midland
The usual first move on a loose Midland shower handle is the tiny screw hidden under the cap. If it was loose, tightening it might end the problem. If the handle slips again in a week, the splines on the cartridge stem are worn and the handle is only the messenger.
Midland began as a railroad stop in 1873, and the county plan lists historic houses on Midland, Rogues, Carolina, Dowell and Germantown Roads. About 15 percent of the ZIP’s homes went up in 1939 or earlier. In houses that old, the original bath often got a shower later, and it may hang off a valve from any decade since. We find out which before we quote a repair.
Close to 45 percent of the ZIP’s homes predate 1980, and many have the first generation of single-handle valves. Parts for the oldest brands can be hard to find, so we ask for the model before ordering anything. A newer cartridge from a different maker sometimes fits, and sometimes a full valve with trim at $950 to $1,400 is the cleaner call.
FCWSA lists no water system in Midland, and the County’s plan says only that public water is being planned. So a Midland shower is most likely fed by a well and pressure tank. A surge when the pump kicks in is the tank, not the valve. And if you do have sandy or rusty water, expect cartridges to take the hit.
By the numbers
From the Census Bureau’s 2020 to 2024 survey. Median year built and heat count owner-occupied homes only.
ZIP 22728 as a whole: every Midland address, the village included. The Census place for the village alone has too few homes for steady figures.
The signs
If water runs from the tub spout while the shower head is on, the diverter is worn. On a pull-up spout, a new spout is $200 to $400. On a diverter inside the valve, it’s a cartridge.
Usually a set screw under the cap that backed out, or worn teeth where the handle grips the cartridge. Tightening the screw only lasts if the teeth are still good.
On a single-handle shower that’s the cartridge. On an older two-handle or three-handle shower, it’s the washers or the stems. Either one comes out the front, and the wall stays closed.

Choosing who does it
Questions to ask anybody who pulls your shower handle off, us included.
They should. A plumber who can name the valve can tell you whether parts are in stock, whether a different cartridge will fit, or whether the better answer is a new valve.
Most loose handles and drips are a cartridge or a screw. A plumber who prices a new valve without looking inside first may be selling you a wall you didn’t need opened.
A shower that runs fine on its own can still jump hot when someone flushes. Ask them to run it both ways before they pack up.

Zabi did a great job. Fill valve, flush valve and gaskets replaced on this 30-yr-old toilet. No leaks, no run-on.
Questions
Fix the drip if parts exist. A cartridge or stems repair at $250 to $450 keeps the same trim. A new valve with trim at $950 to $1,400 is for a valve that has no parts left.
Only if the surge happens at other taps as well. We test the shower and a sink together, and tell you where the problem is before we price anything.
Most shower valve repairs we do run $250 to $450, with the visit at $49, $250 after hours. A whole new valve with trim runs $950 to $1,400, and a tub spout runs $200 to $400.
Not for a cartridge, a handle or a diverter. Those come out the front. A valve replacement goes in from an access panel when there is one, and when there isn’t, a larger trim plate can usually cover the opening so the tile stays.
