A shower that bangs or whistles
A whistle through the valve, or a thump when you shut it, often points to high pressure or a worn cartridge seat. Check the gauge at the hose bib. Over 80 psi means a regulator belongs on the list.

What’s different in Catlett
A loose handle in Catlett starts the way it does everywhere. A screw under the cap backs out, or the stem’s grip wears round, and a cartridge is what holds it for good. Tightening is the five-minute fix. A new cartridge is the one that lasts.
FCWSA’s Catlett system is two wells pumping to an elevated tank, and the height of that tank is what pushes water to your tap. A house low in the district can see a lot more pressure than one up the hill. FCWSA says it can’t guarantee uniform pressure, and that over 80 psi the customer should install a pressure regulating valve. High pressure shortens a cartridge’s life, so a shower that drips again within a couple of years is a reason to put a gauge on a hose bib.
Catlett’s ZIP is all detached homes, and 44 percent were built before 1980, which usually means an early single-handle valve, with the oldest brands hard to match. We check what’s in the wall before promising to replace a cartridge. A modest share of 1950s farmhouses may have two handles. About a quarter were built since 2000 with pressure-balancing valves where a drip is almost always the cartridge.
Past the tower’s service area, houses here are on wells of their own, with a pressure tank doing the tower’s work. The valve repair is the same either way. The difference is where we look for the cause of a surge: on the tank side, or the valve.
By the numbers
From the Census Bureau’s 2020 to 2024 survey. Median year built and heat count owner-occupied homes only.
ZIP 20119 as a whole: every Catlett address, the village included. The Census place for the village alone has too few homes for steady figures.
The signs
A whistle through the valve, or a thump when you shut it, often points to high pressure or a worn cartridge seat. Check the gauge at the hose bib. Over 80 psi means a regulator belongs on the list.
Usually a set screw under the cap that backed out, or worn teeth where the handle grips the cartridge. Tightening the screw only lasts if the teeth are still good.
On a single-handle shower that’s the cartridge. On an older two-handle or three-handle shower, it’s the washers or the stems. Either one comes out the front, and the wall stays closed.

Choosing who does it
Questions to ask anybody who pulls your shower handle off, us included.
A pressure gauge takes a minute. A plumber who skips it may install a part that fails again for the same reason.
Most loose handles and drips are a cartridge or a screw. A plumber who prices a new valve without looking inside first may be selling you a wall you didn’t need opened.
A shower that runs fine on its own can still jump hot when someone flushes. Ask them to run it both ways before they pack up.

Questions
The Authority maintains its mains and the line to the meter. Everything on your side, the valve and a regulator included, is yours, and our visit is $49.
It can wait a few weeks, but not forever. A drip wears the seat further every day, and a cartridge at $250 to $450 is cheaper than a valve at $950 to $1,400.
Most shower valve repairs we do run $250 to $450, with the visit at $49, $250 after hours. A whole new valve with trim runs $950 to $1,400, and a tub spout runs $200 to $400.
Not for a cartridge, a handle or a diverter. Those come out the front. A valve replacement goes in from an access panel when there is one, and when there isn’t, a larger trim plate can usually cover the opening so the tile stays.
