What it costs

What drain cleaning costs in Catlett.

Where the clog sits decides the price. A sink, tub or shower drain is one fixture. When every drain in the house is slow or water comes up the lowest one, it’s the main line, and that’s a bigger machine and a longer run.

If the main line clogs again inside a year, or the cable comes back with roots, a camera look for $89 on the same visit tells you whether it’s a clog or a broken pipe. We show you the picture either way.

Comfort+ membership is $199 a year for four visits: a dryer vent cleaning, a water heater flush with a sewer camera inspection, a heating maintenance visit and a cooling maintenance visit.

What’s different in Catlett

Catlett’s biggest decade is the 1960s, and its oldest houses came with the railroad.

The Orange and Alexandria Railroad came through in 1852 and the village grew around its stop. The Census counts 179 homes in this ZIP from 1939 or earlier, and then a long gap until the 1960s, when 197 went up, followed by 193 in the 1970s. That’s a lot of houses built when cast iron still ran under the floor and kitchen branches were laid in short, tight bends.

Those 1960s and 1970s houses are the typical Catlett call. A kitchen line that has carried sixty years of cooking has scale on its walls, and the pipe is narrower than the day it went in. The sink doesn’t stop all at once. It drains a little slower each season until a holiday weekend finishes it off.

Dairy farms still operate around the village, and farm kitchens and mudrooms handle a lot of water. Boots, barn clothes, a second refrigerator sink, a laundry that runs every day: that’s a heavy load for a line sized for a smaller household. Lint and soap build up in the laundry branch first, so the standpipe is where we look.

Cedar Run runs close to the village. When it climbs to 21 feet at the Route 806 bridge, water reaches buildings nearby, and in July 2013 it crested at 18.2 feet. Even at the lower levels, the saturated ground behind a house can slow a drain that works fine in dry weather. If yours acts up after storms and clears on its own, say so when you call.

Which clog it is

One slow drain, or the whole house backing up in Catlett.

The laundry is draining, and the kitchen sink is gurgling

When the washer empties and the kitchen sink or a floor drain bubbles, the water is looking for a way out past a partial blockage. That’s the main run, and it’s worth clearing before it closes up completely.

Only one sink or tub is slow

If the kitchen sink backs up but the bathroom drains fine, the clog is in that branch, usually grease or food in the kitchen, hair and soap in a tub. That’s a one-fixture clearing.

Water comes up the lowest drain

When the washer drains and water shows up in a basement shower or floor drain, or flushing a toilet bubbles the tub, the clog is past the branches in the main line. Stop running water until it’s cleared.

Choosing who clears it

How to pick the best plumber for drain cleaning in Catlett.

Questions to ask anybody who offers to clear a drain, us included.

  1. Do they ask how old the house is before choosing a cutter?

A 1965 kitchen line and a 1995 PVC line need different tools. A crew that asks the house’s age is picking the right cutter for the pipe, not guessing.

  2. Do they price it before they run the cable?

You should hear whether it’s a one-drain clearing or the main line, and the price for it, before anybody feeds a cable in. A price that shows up after the work is a bad sign.

  3. Do they push chemicals or a new line on the first visit?

A clear drain doesn’t need a bottle of anything, and a single clog is not a reason to dig. If someone jumps to replacing the sewer line without a camera picture, get a second look.

Questions

Drain questions from Catlett.

The drains in my Catlett house run slow all at once. Is the pipe failing?

Usually it’s a partial blockage in the main run, not a failure. Years of buildup on the inside of old pipe narrows it until a small clog finishes the job. We clear it, and if the cable shows heavy scale we’ll tell you what to expect.

Should I run drain cleaner before you come out?

We’d skip it. Liquid cleaners sit in a standing line and can splash on whoever opens the trap, and they rarely reach a clog that’s feet down the run. Run hot water and wait for us.

How much does drain cleaning cost in Catlett?

One clogged sink, tub or shower drain is $200 to $800. A main line backing up into the house is $550 to $1,650. Where the clog is and how far down it sits moves the number inside that range.

Should I pour a drain cleaner in first?

Better not. The strong ones can sit in the trap, damage older pipe, and splash back on whoever opens the drain next. Try a plunger on a sink or tub, and if that doesn’t move it, call.
