A kitchen that began as its own building
If the kitchen sink is the slowest drain in the house and the rest are fine, the sink’s own branch is the suspect. In a joined-on kitchen that branch is long, so grease settles in its low point.

What it costs
Where the clog sits decides the price. A sink, tub or shower drain is one fixture. When every drain in the house is slow or water comes up the lowest one, it’s the main line, and that’s a bigger machine and a longer run.

If the main line clogs again inside a year, or the cable comes back with roots, a camera look for $89 on the same visit tells you whether it’s a clog or a broken pipe. We show you the picture either way.
Comfort+ membership is $199 a year for four visits: a dryer vent cleaning, a water heater flush with a sewer camera inspection, a heating maintenance visit and a cooling maintenance visit.
What’s different in Orlean
The village’s register listing mentions a house on Leeds Manor Road with a rear ell attached to what was once a separate summer kitchen. That tells you something about the drain. Kitchens that began as separate buildings were joined to the house later, and their sink lines were joined to the house’s line later still. The run from the sink to the main is often long, shallow and full of angles.
Two other village buildings changed jobs. The Orlean School closed in 1944 and is now a home on Cliff Mills Road, and Jeffries Store is a residence too. Converting a school or a store means putting a kitchen and bathrooms where there were none, in new pipe tied to whatever the building had. When one of those drains slows, we start by asking where the plumbing was added, because the clog is usually near a join.
Around the village, the picture is different. The Census block group centered on Orlean counts 576 homes, every one detached, with a median build year of 1982 and the 1990s as the busiest decade. These are plastic-pipe houses, and the clogs are what you’d expect: hair in the bath, fat in the kitchen, lint in the laundry. A cable and a few minutes, in most cases.
Rain can mislead you here. On the morning of August 29, 2020, a gauge nearby measured 4.26 inches in 24 hours, and Cliff Mills Road flooded. After a downpour like that, a basement floor drain can seep while the line itself is fine. If a drain is slow only after storms, tell us, because the fix is on a different list from a clog.
By the numbers
From the Census Bureau’s 2020 to 2024 survey, owner-occupied homes unless it says otherwise.
Orlean’s own ZIP, 20128, is post office boxes only, so the Census Bureau maps no area for it. These are ZIP 20115 as a whole, the Marshall ZIP area Orlean sits in, Marshall included.
Which clog it is
If the kitchen sink is the slowest drain in the house and the rest are fine, the sink’s own branch is the suspect. In a joined-on kitchen that branch is long, so grease settles in its low point.
If the kitchen sink backs up but the bathroom drains fine, the clog is in that branch, usually grease or food in the kitchen, hair and soap in a tub. That’s a one-fixture clearing.
When the washer drains and water shows up in a basement shower or floor drain, or flushing a toilet bubbles the tub, the clog is past the branches in the main line. Stop running water until it’s cleared.

Choosing who clears it
Questions to ask anybody who offers to clear a drain, us included.
A crew that knows a converted outbuilding or schoolroom has its own drain history is thinking about where the pipe was joined. That’s where a cable will hang up, and it’s worth knowing before they start.
You should hear whether it’s a one-drain clearing or the main line, and the price for it, before anybody feeds a cable in. A price that shows up after the work is a bad sign.
A clear drain doesn’t need a bottle of anything, and a single clog is not a reason to dig. If someone jumps to replacing the sewer line without a camera picture, get a second look.

On July 3, I called to have a clogged floor drain cleared. Thankfully they arrived on July 4th which was greatly appreciated. No one else would come out do to the holiday. Thank you

Questions
Because the kitchen has its own branch, and grease is what clogs it. Bathrooms carry mostly water and soap, which rinse through. We clear the kitchen branch from the sink or the nearest cleanout.
Run water in the sinks. If they’re slow, it’s a clog. If everything drains fine and the floor drain only seeps after a storm, the water is coming from the ground, and a cable won’t change that.
One clogged sink, tub or shower drain is $200 to $800. A main line backing up into the house is $550 to $1,650. Where the clog is and how far down it sits moves the number inside that range.
Better not. The strong ones can sit in the trap, damage older pipe, and splash back on whoever opens the drain next. Try a plunger on a sink or tub, and if that doesn’t move it, call.
