What it costs

What drain cleaning costs in Chantilly.

Where the clog sits decides the price. A sink, tub or shower drain is one fixture. When every drain in the house is slow or water comes up the lowest one, it’s the main line, and that’s a bigger machine and a longer run.

If the main line clogs again inside a year, or the cable comes back with roots, a camera look for $89 on the same visit tells you whether it’s a clog or a broken pipe. We show you the picture either way.

Comfort+ membership is $199 a year for four visits: a dryer vent cleaning, a water heater flush with a sewer camera inspection, a heating maintenance visit and a cooling maintenance visit.

What’s different in Chantilly

Chantilly has three drain ages in one ZIP code area, and each clogs in a different place.

Greenbriar is the oldest of the three. The typical owner’s house there dates from 1970, and close to six in ten predate 1980. Inside a house that age the kitchen drain is usually cast iron with a rough, scaled bore, and the grease that hardened in it has been building a layer for decades. A cable cleans the middle of the pipe and leaves the layer on the walls, so a drain that clogs again in six months gets a bigger cutter on the next pass, not another round of the same one.

The rest of the Chantilly addresses are mostly built from 1980 to 1999, and about six in ten of them are in that window. Plastic had taken over by then, and a clog in one of those houses is rarely the pipe giving out. It is a hair mat in a tub, a dishwasher line backing into a disposal, or wipes that reached the main run. We ask what went down the drain before we ask about the pipe, and that usually settles it.

Chantilly mail also covers South Riding, over the county line, where about eight in ten homes went up after 2000 and nearly half are townhouses. The pipes are as new as they get, so the call is almost always grease in the kitchen branch or a flushed wipe. In a row of townhouses, if the unit next to yours has the same slow tub, tell us before we run the machine, since it may be one clog serving both.

We do not push a camera on every drain call in any of the three. Where one cable pass opens the line and it runs clean for months, the clog was the problem. If it is back in a season, $89 added to a visit shows whether the cause is a belly in the pipe or roots, and the picture decides whether you need another cleaning or a repair.

Which clog it is

One slow drain, or the whole house backing up in Chantilly.

A clog that returns is telling you something

Greenbriar-age kitchen lines that clog every few months are usually coated, not blocked. Hot water and a plunger won’t change that. The line needs a proper cutter, and then a look to see how much pipe is left.

The townhouse next door backed up too

Townhouse rows often share a line before it reaches the street. If a neighbor is fighting the same clog, tell us, because the fix may be on common pipe the association handles.

A newer house that clogs anyway

New PVC rarely fails, so in a house this young a clog is almost always something that went down: wipes, grease, a toy. One clearing usually ends it.

Choosing who clears it

How to pick the best plumber for drain cleaning in Chantilly.

Questions to ask anybody who offers to clear a drain, us included.

  1. Do they ask how old the house is before they pick a cutter?

A cutter that clears a 1990s plastic line can chew into scaled cast iron. A good plumber asks the year, then matches the head to the pipe.

  2. Do they price it before they run the cable?

You should hear whether it’s a one-drain clearing or the main line, and the price for it, before anybody feeds a cable in. A price that shows up after the work is a bad sign.

  3. Do they push chemicals or a new line on the first visit?

A clear drain doesn’t need a bottle of anything, and a single clog is not a reason to dig. If someone jumps to replacing the sewer line without a camera picture, get a second look.

Questions

Drain questions from Chantilly.

My Chantilly sink drains slowly but the tub is fine. Is that the main line?

Probably not. One slow fixture points to its own branch, usually grease in the kitchen or hair in the tub. When every drain is sluggish, or water rises in the lowest one, that is the main line and a different job.

Do South Riding townhouses have different clogs than Greenbriar houses?

Yes. Newer townhouses mostly clog from what went down the drain. Older Greenbriar kitchen lines clog from layers that built up inside the pipe, and they come back sooner.

How much does drain cleaning cost in Chantilly?

One clogged sink, tub or shower drain is $200 to $800. A main line backing up into the house is $550 to $1,650. Where the clog is and how far down it sits moves the number inside that range.

Should I pour a drain cleaner in first?

Better not. The strong ones can sit in the trap, damage older pipe, and splash back on whoever opens the drain next. Try a plunger on a sink or tub, and if that doesn’t move it, call.
