What moves the price is the model and the path to it: a bypass model on an open basement furnace with a water line close by is the simple end, a fan-powered model in a tight closet with a long run for water and a drain is the other.

If the house already has a humidifier that stopped, we look at it first. Often it’s a crusted water panel, a closed saddle valve or a control that lost its wiring, and that’s a repair, not a new unit.

What’s different in Chantilly

Chantilly splits down the middle, gas furnace on one side, heat pump on the other.

Of Chantilly’s owner homes, 53 percent heat with gas and 44 percent with electricity, which is about as close to a coin flip as any town we work in. Before we pick anything, we find out which half your house is in. Walk out and look at the equipment: a condenser out back and an air handler inside means a heat pump, and a furnace with a flue pipe means gas.

Gas houses get a bypass Aprilaire, a 600-series that uses the furnace’s warm supply air to do the evaporating. Heat pump houses get a fan-powered 700-series, because the air is cooler and the unit has to push its own. Same dry January, two different machines, and a quote that doesn’t say which is the one to doubt.

Sixty percent of Chantilly owner homes were built between 1980 and 1999, and six in ten are detached. A lot of those colonials have the furnace in a full basement with open ductwork around it, which is the easy install. A room over a garage that never gets warm is still a duct issue and not a humidity one, so don’t blame the humidifier for it.

Look at the ductwork over your furnace before anything else. A lot of homes here have a builder’s humidifier already sitting there with a dry pad. If yours is one, the $99 visit is the cheap way to find out; our humidifier page covers what a new one involves.

  • Built before 1980about 2 in 10 Census
  • Built since 2000about 2 in 10 Census
  • Most homes aresingle-family houses, about 6 in 10 Census
  • Heated withgas, about 5 in 10 Census
  • Rentedabout 2 in 10 Census
  • Houses from the 80s and 90s often came with a builder’s humidifier on the furnace, and many of those are still on the duct, switched off.
  • Most homes here are detached houses with the furnace in a basement or utility room, which usually leaves room for a bypass model on the ductwork.

20152, the South Riding side

  • Median home built2006 Census
  • Built before 1980hardly any Census
  • Built since 2000about 8 in 10 Census
  • Most homes aresingle-family houses, about 5 in 10 Census
  • Heated withgas, about 8 in 10 Census
  • Rentedabout 2 in 10 Census
  • Newer houses are built tighter, so a smaller humidifier holds the number and the outdoor sensor matters more, to keep the windows dry.
  • Many homes here are townhouses or condos with the system in a closet. A fan-powered model fits where there’s no room for a bypass duct, and in a condo the association may need to approve the water line.

The signs

When a Chantilly house is too dry in winter.

Doorknobs and stair rails all winter

Static shocks are the quick tell in Chantilly’s heat pump houses, which run the blower long and slow. If you feel a zap on the stair rail before breakfast, the house is near 20 percent.

Static every time you touch a doorknob

A zap off every light switch in January means the air in the house is well under 30 percent. Outdoor winter air holds little water, and heating it dries it further.

Floors and trim open up gaps

Wood gives up water in dry air. Gaps between floorboards, a cabinet door that sticks, or a piano that won’t hold its tuning through winter all point the same way.

Choosing who does it

How to pick who installs a humidifier in Chantilly.

Questions to ask anybody who quotes you one, us included.

  1. Did they ask what the house heats with?

A good quote in Chantilly starts with gas furnace or heat pump, because the two take different humidifiers. If they priced one model for any house, ask why.

  2. Did they ask where the water and the drain come from?

A humidifier needs a water line and, for most models, a drain. Whoever looks for both before quoting is the one who won’t surprise you on install day.

  3. Did they say which kind, and why?

A bypass model, a fan-powered model and a steam model each suit different systems. Ask why theirs fits your furnace or heat pump, not just what it costs.

Questions

Humidifier questions from Chantilly.

Is my Chantilly house too tight for one?

Probably not. Houses from the 80s and 90s let in plenty of dry outside air, and a bypass or fan-powered model sized for them holds a steady number.

Does the humidifier run all summer?

No. It’s off from spring to fall, and the water line gets shut at the valve. We’ll show you where it is and when to open it again.

How much is a whole-home humidifier in Chantilly?

It’s priced at your house, in writing, because the model and the work depend on your system, your ducts and where the water line is. If you have one that stopped working, the diagnostic visit is $99.

What humidity should the house be at in winter?

The EPA says keep indoor humidity between 30 and 50 percent. On the coldest nights we run it nearer the low end so windows don’t sweat, and an Aprilaire with an outdoor sensor turns itself down for you.
