A piano that goes flat every February
Old pine floors, plaster walls and a family piano all take moisture from the air in winter. If the piano drifts out of tune each year, the house is telling you where the humidity sits.

What moves the price is the model and the path to it: a bypass model on an open basement furnace with a water line close by is the simple end, a fan-powered model in a tight closet with a long run for water and a drain is the other.
If the house already has a humidifier that stopped, we look at it first. Often it’s a crusted water panel, a closed saddle valve or a control that lost its wiring, and that’s a repair, not a new unit.
What’s different in Bluemont
Gas barely exists up here: about three owners in a hundred use it. Better than half heat with electricity, which means a heat pump or electric furnace, another one in seven burns propane, and a quarter list wood or something else. A bypass humidifier relies on hot supply air to do the evaporating, and a heat pump does not give it much. For most Bluemont houses the fan-powered kind is the right match, because it brings its own airflow.
The wood stove matters for another reason. A stove can drive the house down to 15 or 20 percent humidity on a windy night, and it heats one room hard while the ducts sit idle. A humidifier tied to the duct system only works while that system runs. If the stove is your main heat, a whole-home unit will help less than you hope, and we will say so.
Almost half the owner homes were built before 1980, and nine in ten are detached houses on their own lots. Older frames let in cold outdoor air around sills and windows, which dries them out quickly, so these houses ask for more output than a 2005 build does. In the country the air handler often sits in a crawlspace or a closet off a hallway, and the water line and drain have to get there, so the path decides the job as much as the model.
Part of this ZIP sits in Clarke County and part in Loudoun, but the question is the same on both sides of the line: where does the furnace live, and how far is cold water. If you already have a humidifier, the $99 visit tells you whether it needs a pad or a control.
By the numbers
From the Census Bureau’s 2020 to 2024 survey. Median year built and heat count owner-occupied homes only.
ZIP 20135 as a whole: about seven in ten of its homes are in Clarke County, most of the rest in Loudoun around the village, and a few in West Virginia.
The signs
Old pine floors, plaster walls and a family piano all take moisture from the air in winter. If the piano drifts out of tune each year, the house is telling you where the humidity sits.
A zap off every light switch in January means the air in the house is well under 30 percent. Outdoor winter air holds little water, and heating it dries it further.
Wood gives up water in dry air. Gaps between floorboards, a cabinet door that sticks, or a piano that won’t hold its tuning through winter all point the same way.

Choosing who does it
Questions to ask anybody who quotes you one, us included.
Ask which model they would hang on a heat pump and why. A bypass unit needs warm air to evaporate water, so a fan-powered one is the usual answer on cooler supply air.
A humidifier needs a water line and, for most models, a drain. Whoever looks for both before quoting is the one who won’t surprise you on install day.
A bypass model, a fan-powered model and a steam model each suit different systems. Ask why theirs fits your furnace or heat pump, not just what it costs.

Questions
It treats only the rooms the ducts reach, and only when they run. If the stove carries most of the winter, a small room unit may suit better, and a duct system with a heat pump is where a whole-home one earns its place.
Not for how the humidifier works. Permits follow the county your address falls in, so tell us the street and we sort out the rest.
It’s priced at your house, in writing, because the model and the work depend on your system, your ducts and where the water line is. If you have one that stopped working, the diagnostic visit is $99.
The EPA says keep indoor humidity between 30 and 50 percent. On the coldest nights we run it nearer the low end so windows don’t sweat, and an Aprilaire with an outdoor sensor turns itself down for you.
