Kids’ rooms and the static
Woodbridge parents tend to notice it at bedtime: blankets that crackle, a shock off the crib rail, frost-dry window sills. That’s what a humidifier on the furnace changes, room by room, without a tabletop unit to fill.

What moves the price is the model and the path to it: a bypass model on an open basement furnace with a water line close by is the simple end, a fan-powered model in a tight closet with a long run for water and a drain is the other.
If the house already has a humidifier that stopped, we look at it first. Often it’s a crusted water panel, a closed saddle valve or a control that lost its wiring, and that’s a repair, not a new unit.
What’s different in Woodbridge
Woodbridge covers a lot of ground, and the ground changed over time. Dale City’s early houses date from the 1970s, Lake Ridge filled in during the 1980s and 90s, and about three in ten homes here have gone up since 2000. That’s a wide spread, so the same humidifier doesn’t suit them all.
The oldest Dale City ramblers leak the most air and take a bigger unit with a higher output. The Lake Ridge colonials from the 1980s sit in the middle. The newest subdivisions, built tight, take a smaller unit set lower. We ask the year your house was built before we say a model. A walk through the neighborhood shows it: the roof lines, window styles and garage doors tell you which decade you are standing in.
Gas heats about 57 percent of owner homes and electric about 39. In a county where electric heat is common, plenty of Woodbridge houses have heat pumps, often with electric strips as backup. The fan-powered Aprilaire is the match for those. The gas homes take the bypass model on the furnace.
The Town’s water comes through Prince William Water, and we don’t have a hardness figure for your street. As a rule, harder water leaves white crust on the water panel sooner, so we show you how to check it midwinter. If a builder-installed humidifier is on your furnace, the $99 visit tells you if it still works. Bring the model number from the furnace door and a photo of whatever sits on the duct, and we can usually tell you what you have before a visit.
Neighborhood by neighborhood
Census figures for the owner-occupied homes in each place, and the humidifier that usually suits houses like them.
| Place | Median home built | Most homes are | Heated with | What usually fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dale City | 1983 | single-family houses, about 7 in 10 | gas, about 7 in 10 | A bypass model on the gas furnace’s ductwork. |
| Lake Ridge | 1985 | townhouses, about 4 in 10 | electricity, about 5 in 10 | A fan-powered model, since heat pump air runs cooler. |
| Woodbridge | 1976 | single-family houses, about 4 in 10 | gas, about 5 in 10 | A bypass model with more output, for a draftier house. |
| Leesylvania | 2006 | single-family houses, about 4 in 10 | gas, about 6 in 10 | A bypass model on the gas furnace’s ductwork. |
| Potomac Mills | 1988 | single-family houses, about 6 in 10 | electricity, about 7 in 10 | A fan-powered model, since heat pump air runs cooler. |
| County Center | 2006 | townhouses, about 4 in 10 | gas, about 6 in 10 | A bypass model on the gas furnace’s ductwork. |

The signs
Woodbridge parents tend to notice it at bedtime: blankets that crackle, a shock off the crib rail, frost-dry window sills. That’s what a humidifier on the furnace changes, room by room, without a tabletop unit to fill.
A zap off every light switch in January means the air in the house is well under 30 percent. Outdoor winter air holds little water, and heating it dries it further.
Wood gives up water in dry air. Gaps between floorboards, a cabinet door that sticks, or a piano that won’t hold its tuning through winter all point the same way.

Choosing who does it
Questions to ask anybody who quotes you one, us included.
The age of the house sets how much output you need. Ask the installer how they chose the size, and whether it changes with the year built.
A humidifier needs a water line and, for most models, a drain. Whoever looks for both before quoting is the one who won’t surprise you on install day.
A bypass model, a fan-powered model and a steam model each suit different systems. Ask why theirs fits your furnace or heat pump, not just what it costs.

Rich came out to give us an estimate and setup installation of a whole home humidifier. He was friendly, on-time, and very knowledgeable and made sure we were getting what would work best for our home. Highly recommend!

Questions
Often a smaller one. Tight houses stay damper than old ramblers, but the winter air still comes in dry. Check the static and the floors before deciding.
Yes, if the house is dry. Use the fan-powered model so it does not depend on hot furnace air. Our humidifier page covers the types.
It’s priced at your house, in writing, because the model and the work depend on your system, your ducts and where the water line is. If you have one that stopped working, the diagnostic visit is $99.
The EPA says keep indoor humidity between 30 and 50 percent. On the coldest nights we run it nearer the low end so windows don’t sweat, and an Aprilaire with an outdoor sensor turns itself down for you.
