What moves the price is the model and the path to it: a bypass model on an open basement furnace with a water line close by is the simple end, a fan-powered model in a tight closet with a long run for water and a drain is the other.

If the house already has a humidifier that stopped, we look at it first. Often it’s a crusted water panel, a closed saddle valve or a control that lost its wiring, and that’s a repair, not a new unit.

What’s different in Warrenton

Warrenton runs mostly on gas, so the bypass humidifier is the usual one, with exceptions.

About six owner homes in ten inside Warrenton heat with gas, which is a lot for Fauquier. A gas furnace makes hot supply air, and a bypass Aprilaire uses that heat to evaporate its water without a blower of its own. It’s the standard choice in town. About a quarter of town owners heat with electricity, and those heat pump houses get the fan-powered model.

Nearly three in ten town homes predate 1960, the Historic District among them. A humidifier is an inside job, so the district rarely matters, but the oldest houses have the leakiest envelopes and the driest winters. Because nobody wants new ducts through plaster, we put the unit where the existing system sits.

About one town home in five is a townhouse and one in ten is a condo or apartment. Those systems are in closets, with a short drain and a short water line or none at all. Some buildings share a riser and the association has a say. We look at the closet and the nearest cold line before saying yes.

Out in New Baltimore, nearly half the homes went up after 2000, and almost half heat with gas. Those houses are tight, and a unit set for a drafty colonial will put water on the windows. We start lower and move up.a unit set for a drafty colonial will put water on the windows. We start lower and move up, checking the north-facing glass after the first cold night. The town draws its water from two reservoirs and some wells, one of them softened, with no hardness figure in the report.

  • Most homes here are detached houses with the furnace in a basement or utility room, which usually leaves room for a bypass model on the ductwork.

The Fauquier County side

New Baltimore only. It’s the one Census place on the county side with mostly Warrenton mail, so the farms and lots beyond it aren’t in these figures.

  • Newer houses are built tighter, so a smaller humidifier holds the number and the outdoor sensor matters more, to keep the windows dry.

The signs

When a Warrenton house is too dry in winter.

The leaky old house and the sealed new one

Two Warrenton houses on the same night can need different settings. The 1920s house in town loses moisture through every seam, and the 2005 house in New Baltimore holds it.

Static every time you touch a doorknob

A zap off every light switch in January means the air in the house is well under 30 percent. Outdoor winter air holds little water, and heating it dries it further.

Floors and trim open up gaps

Wood gives up water in dry air. Gaps between floorboards, a cabinet door that sticks, or a piano that won’t hold its tuning through winter all point the same way.

Choosing who does it

How to pick who installs a humidifier in Warrenton.

Questions to ask anybody who quotes you one, us included.

  1. Do they set it by the age of the house?

Ask how they’d set the control for your house in particular. A tight new house and a leaky old one shouldn’t get the same number.

  2. Did they ask where the water and the drain come from?

A humidifier needs a water line and, for most models, a drain. Whoever looks for both before quoting is the one who won’t surprise you on install day.

  3. Did they say which kind, and why?

A bypass model, a fan-powered model and a steam model each suit different systems. Ask why theirs fits your furnace or heat pump, not just what it costs.

Excellent HVAC service for a fair and reasonable price. Moises Rojas fixed my home’s whole house humidifier, which I had no idea wasn’t working for over two years since moving into this house, and now the air in my home is very comfortable.

Questions

Humidifier questions from Warrenton.

Does my gas furnace need anything special?

No. A gas furnace is the easiest to fit with a bypass model. We check there is room on the duct and a water line and drain nearby.

Will a condo association let me install one?

Some do and some want to approve new plumbing first. Ask your management office, and we’ll work from their answer.

How much is a whole-home humidifier in Warrenton?

It’s priced at your house, in writing, because the model and the work depend on your system, your ducts and where the water line is. If you have one that stopped working, the diagnostic visit is $99.

What humidity should the house be at in winter?

The EPA says keep indoor humidity between 30 and 50 percent. On the coldest nights we run it nearer the low end so windows don’t sweat, and an Aprilaire with an outdoor sensor turns itself down for you.
